Paul O'Brien's Recovery Fund
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Colleen Garry and I am working with Paul's family to raise funds for home modifications and other costs that are not covered by medical insurance that Paul and his wife, Sheila Keough O'Brien encounter as he recovers from being hit by an alleged drunk driver in Dracut, MA on March 5, 2022. The vehicle driven by the alleged drunk driver had minimal insurance and not everything is covered by Paul's medical insurance.
Paul is a court officer at the Lowell Judicial Center and has been involved in many civic organizations such as the Lowell Elks. In May, 2020, Paul ran to a neighbor's house when he heard yells for help and proceeded to do CPR on a wonderful 86 year old man. Sadly, the gentleman did not survive but this just shows you the type of person, Paul O'Brien is!
The accident was so serious, Paul was medflighted to Lahey Clinic's Neurotrauma Center and State Police reconstruction unit was called to investigate. Honestly, many felt that we would lose Paul. But with the grace of God, incredible medical professionals and the love and support from Sheila and Paul's family members, Paul is on the road to recovery.
He has sustained MANY fractures including his legs, pelvis, hips, lower back and a traumatic brain injury. He has had three surgeries and after being removed from an induced coma, he has unbelievably recognized people, followed commands, has been recovering his swallowing abilities and his speech is much more understandable. Paul had the opportunity to start rehab at Spaulding Rehab in Boston but insurance required that he had to be transferred to a rehabilitation center in Littleton. It doesn't have the intensive programing that Spaulding has but Paul is a fighter!! He will do all that he needs to in the coming days, weeks, and months to get back to his prior healthy self.
It is expected that he may be released home in 35 days! We are doubling our efforts to get his townhouse modified to make it easier for him to get in and out safely and to be able to live comfortably during the continuation of his rehabilitation.
On behalf of Paul, Sheila, and Paul's family and friends, I thank you for your continued prayers, messages and donations to help us make any home modifications like chairlifts that Paul will need in the future.
