Paulinzella Event Saal and Community Center

Donation protected
We are the Hakuba's! I'm Julia (opera singer, trouble shooter, improviser, magician), my husband is Tomasz (teacher, philosopher, climber, fireman, builder, innovative master of everything he does), and our kids are Silvia (3), Klara (11), Kilian (14) and Aurelia (17).

We are the proud owners of a beautiful historic building in a well known, small village called Paulinzella in Germany. Because it was in such disrepair we bought it for a very low price and knew we would need to invest a lot of time money into the restoration.

I saw this Paulinzella building in a dream when I was 17 years old and it came to me almost 30 years later. It's very clear to me that my life's work in the arts and the relationships I have built along the way have lead me to this point.

My dream is to develop a center for people to come and learn or create in a peaceful and quiet environment with a community providing a supportive audience.

This center revealed itself to us winter 2020 and after 30 years of darkness, we gave our first concert to a private audience who some remember last being there as children. At the end of the concert our neighbour, Thomas, got up with his guitar and sang a Paulinzella song in which everyone sang along. It was a very emotional evening and one we hope will live on through other events.

Winter is fast approaching. There is an apartment attached to the center which we are currently trying to renovate but is now only partly finished. We are in desperate need of more insulation and other materials to finish the construction of our home section before winter. Once our home is finished we can continue working on the rest of the center and plan to open the first official season in late Spring. Our priority this year is to finish the apartment so we can brave the cold winter here.

The past three years we have been only here during holiday time and summers because to stay here we had to live in our little camper which was our only warm place. Sponge baths were only possible in our small downstairs kitchen.

Winters can be brutal here but we have come a long way with our living situation. We can at least take a shower and sleep in a proper bed now but the roof is still not insulated and we have run out of money with unexpected costs. Tomek has also had to go into early retirement because of Lyme disease which was an unexpected change. Nevertheless, we are pressing on with our project in hopes we can bring things to the next level as planned.

This building is on the brink of complete ruin and we are now taking steps to renovate and carve out a home and place for the community to gather and grow with us and our family. It has had many lives and was made partly from the sand stones of the monastery ruin across the street which was built in 1100. No one knows how old the first part of the building (the cellar) is but it has been added onto throughout many decades.

Once this is finished we will start improving our center and create a beautiful space for the community and provide concerts, children's programs, operas, artist in residence programs, a rehearsal space and an event space for rentals.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. We hope you can dream with us and help provide many families and artists with opportunities to experience our Paulinzella Cultural Center or what we would like to name it Kulturbrauerei Paulinzella .

One last note: Here is a link about the very famous monastery ruin across the street from our home. Kloster Paulinzella
