Paving the Path to Peggy’s Forever

Peggy arrived at Pinellas County Animal Services in April 2023 with a fractured pelvis, assumed to be attributed to being hit by a car based on her wounds. Despite having a very painful injury, this sweet 2-yr. old greeted the medical staff with tail wags and her overwhelmingly positive zest for life. 

In support of her recovery, I’ve been her medical foster paw-rent since May 12. When she went for a follow-on x-ray on June 12 to assess the healing process, it was determined due to the severity of Peggy’s injury, she required a Femoral Head Ostectomy (FHO). The FHO would eliminate the painful bone-on-bone friction occurring between her pelvis and left rear femur. While this was not the news we were hoping for, the medical staff at Pinellas County Animal Services knew Peggy deserved to be pain-free given she is a healthy, happy-go-lucky girl with a bright future ahead of her.

The medical staff worked diligently to identify Dr. Oakes at Tampa Bay Veterinary Specialists, an amazing local veterinary surgeon, specializing in orthopedics to perform Peggy’s surgery which took place on July 6. I am extremely happy to report that Peggy is healing nicely and we’re exercising per the doctor’s orders to ensure she regains pain-free mobility…..moving her one step closer to the ultimate goal of Paving the Path to Peggy’s Forever!!

The cost of Peggy’s x-rays, exam, and procedure totaled ~$3.5K which was covered by the Pinellas County Animal Services “Animal Welfare Trust Fund.” This fund is made possible entirely through generous donations made by fellow animal lovers. While the stars aligned for Peggy’s surgery, I’m organizing this fundraiser in hopes of raising enough funds to replenish the Animal Welfare Trust Fund to cover (or possibly exceed) the cost of Peggy’s procedure so the next deserving animal in need can receive the treatment s/he needs.
