Paws for Baby Gentry

Gentry is an amazing two and a half year old boy who has endured so much in his short life. Gentry has a chronic life threatening condition called congenital panhypopituitarisum . Because of this Gentry's pituitary gland did not develop right and so it does not release hormones to his body that are essential for life. Gentry is adrenal insufficient, growth hormone deficient, hypoglycemic and has hypothyroidism. Although all of his hormones are nessesary to keep him healthy and alive, his adrenal insufficiency is the most serious. During times of stress our body needs Cortisol. Without enough cortisol, a life threatening event called an adrenal crisis occurs. An adrenal crisis can quickly spiral into shock, heart failure, coma, brain damage and death.  We are raising money to get Gentry an alert dog. An alert dog is $15,000, but would be an invaluable tool to help us keep our baby safe and alert us when he is not well. Many times Gentry gets sick suddenly and often without warning. His alert dog will be trained to alert us when Gentry is not well and could potentially save his life. Gentry's dog will be trained specifically with his scent. When Gentry's cortisol (stress hormone) is low and Gentry is hypoglycemic, his dog will alert us. Your breath has a certain scent when you are low and dogs sense of smell is 10,000 times stronger than a humans. These dogs are able to detect a drop in blood sugar before Gentry may even show any symptoms and sometimes before a meter is even able to detect a drop. His alert dog will come with Gentry where ever he may go, appointments, school, the park, even will stay with him at the hospital and be his companion. Gentry's dog will also sleep with him at night and will be trained to come wake us up if Gentry is in danger. This dog will also be invaluable in helping us keep Gentry safe as Gentry gets older and starts to get more independent, going to friends houses, school etc..
