In 2019 my family and I were forced to leave our rental property of 12 years not my choice. While searching for a new home, 2020 came around, and the Ciovid 19 pandemic began. It had a tremendous effect on all of us. My stepfather had already been out of work for a whole year due to the impact of being hit by a car while driving a company eighteen-wheeler. My mother was laid off from her job of five years due to Covid. She ended up being out of work for a year as well. While going through all this, I slowly felt more and more distant from my family; it was like spending so much time with everyone made me grow away from them. After moving and caring for our grandmother for about two years, my parents decided to start building a house using only cash throughout the whole process. Experiencing what we had gone through in the past, they wanted to make sure it never happened again. We would have our own home without any loans. We started from the ground up with this project and as time went on, it was like everything got more and more expensive, especially since cost of living has went up . It has been a very busy and expensive year for my family trying to get me through high school, graduation, and then off to college and keeping up with my little brother with one income and just when we thought things were getting better. On May 29th, 2022, 48 hours before my graduation, my little brother slipped out on his pogo stick which caused him to be hospitalized for 5 days. He broke his jaw, chin, mandible, and his teeth are damaged. He mouth had to be wired shut for two weeks and now he has rubber bands up until his surgery in July. This has caused him to be on a liquid diet and now he is progressing to a soft diet. As you know food is very costly. My brother was seeing a trauma team, Neuro, and surgery team. Now he is only seeing a Neuro and Surgery doctor. My parents have been driving at least 60 miles to and from doctors appointments once or twice each week. As we all know gas is very expensive right now. Once his doctors release him then he can start on his dental journey. Watching my parents care for my brother showed me how blessed we are to have two parents in our home. The procedures he has had and needs have and are going to cost thousands of dollars that my parents just don't have sitting around. My stepfather is out of work due to another accident that wasn’t his fault after being back at work for a year now. My mom had to take FMLA to be able to help care for my brother over these next few weeks or months how ever long it takes.Unfortunately, this is something that she gets no compensation for. Again now this has slowed us down on finishing up our home. Through everything we have been through these past couple of years, my parents have remained humble and showed us the importance of having gratitude no matter the situation. My mom always says it could be worse. In a couple of months, I’ll be leaving for college. My mom's dream for me and my brother has always been for us to have a debt-free education. With that being said I wanted to do this for my mother to help her not only be able to care for my brother over these next few months but also not have to worry about where she will get the money to pay bills so that she can focus on my brother. Also, I know my mother has been preparing to send me off to college so this will help her not worry about me as much. Last but not least if this wouldn’t have happened my parents planned on finishing up our new home before I leave for school. So I come to you all today and ask that before I leave them you help in whatever way you can so I have some comfort knowing that even though I can't be there for them someone else will. All my mother wants more than anything is to be able to feed our family, pay bills and any medical expenses, send me off to college, and finish our home.
