On Wednesday, October 14th Payton was on the way to work when she was involved in a devastating car accident. As a result of that accident, she has been in ICU at MUSC and then moved to a step down unit on the trauma/spine floor. Payton is suffering from a traumatic brain injury (TBI) and lacerated kidney. Payton's care team have advised us that she will need rehabilitative care starting as early as next week. Her case worker has submitted an application to Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Shepherd Center is well known for TBI and spinal cord rehabilitation. On October 18th Payton's family and friends celebrated her 24th birthday, celebrating that Payton was still alive.
Although Payton is showing signs of responsiveness, she has a long road ahead. Her eyes may be open, but they are not focusing often. She may acknowledge and respond to some stimulus, which we absolutely celebrate. BUT she may not respond at all after repeated attempts to engage with her. When she speaks, we are hopeful but not all things she says make sense. She sleeps a lot. She can swallow but not feed herself. She is still on IV fluids and all of her basic hygiene functions are performed by her parents or hospital staff.
Her parents have been by her side since she arrived at the hospital. Her dad, Jay has not left her room in days. Her parents need to be by her side to be her voice and advocate on her behalf to her medical team since she is in such a fragile state and cannot speak on her own.
Rachel, Jay, Morgan and Harper dropped everything to be there for Payton. They will have bills to pay. Her parents have expenses from being displaced from their home and essentially camping at a hospital 24/7. This does not begin to take into account hospital bills and rehabilitation costs.
Please consider giving so that money is the last thing the Stanley family has to worry about. They need to focus on Payton and her complete healing.
