On My Feet
Spende geschützt
Hi. I'm Charlie Martin.
-----
Here's another description update. And I have to tell you, I'm already having a major attack of Sally Fields ("You like me! You really like me!"). This has gone from "OMG I'm going to have to sponge off my siblings to pay the rent!" to "OMG, I can fix my old car!"
Even at this level, I'm going to pay some forward to friends I know are in trouble.
But -- what I really love is writing and teaching, and writing computer programs. With $25k, I'd have slack to really make a go of this, and enough slack that I could take consulting jobs but leave time free to do the writing and teaching.
So, even though I can't quite believe it now, I've raised the goal again.
And believe me, I am so grateful already for everything.
-----
Okay, I can't EVEN believe this. I'll be writing a long update today, but the short version is "thank you all so much." This has been a very hard day for cynical misanthropy.
To my utter astonishment, commenters yesterday were saying I'd asked for too little. So I changed the goal this morning.
Now, I'm way over my original goal, and I literally can't tell you how grateful I am. But every bit more is that much more padding as I get my life working again.
Thank you all again. This saved my life.
-----
Some of my friends know that this has been a bad year for me, starting with some time on disability, and followed with a year of irregular employment, ending with me finally being laid off from RefactorU on the Friday before Thanksgiving.
The truth is, right now I'm flat broke, and even my unemployment insurance is hung up in bureaucracy.
After this last year, I want to go a little bit different direction; I want to get enough of my own things going that I'll never find myself in this position again. And frankly, I need some cash to make sure my health insurance and rent get paid. So I'm hoping that people who have enjoyed my writing at PJM and who have followed my ... eclectic content on Facebook might be kind enough to throw in a few dollars to help.
It will make a big difference in terms of being able to sleep at night while I look for more work, and while I'm working on that I'll also be writing, and pursuing a couple of web projects. And once I get past this, I'll be "paying it forward" whenever I can for other people in this position.
