Reggie's Medical Mission to Haiti

Donation protected
Hey everyone! My name is Reginald Chounoune, and I am currently a 3rd year medical student at Howard University College of Medicine. I have been selected, along with 14 other students, residents, and faculty members, to travel to Haiti for an International Medical Elective. In conjunction with the National Organization for the Advancement of Haitians in New York (NOAH-NY), we will be traveling to Fort Liberté, Haiti to provide quality healthcare to hundreds of Haitians in desperate need of assistance, this summer.

On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake hit Haiti causing massive amounts of damage, leaving tens of thousands dead and many others displaced or injured. The earthquake's rumbles did not only shatter the homes of the people living in Haiti at the time, but also the souls of all Haitians around the world, including my own. As the descendant of Haitian immigrants, I felt, and continue to feel an immense obligation to help Haiti in any way possible. At that time, the opportunity never presented itself for me to contribute to the relief directly. However, that did not stop me from helping from the US. As a senior at the University of Miami, I helped organized efforts on campus to collect and send nonperishable foods to Haiti.

I'll never forget the overwhelming sense of doom that hit me as I watched devastating scenes of the tragedy on TV, along with the sense of responsibility and anger that nothing more was being done to help.  Now, as a third year medical student, I have the opportunity to provide a more hands-on approach in supporting Haiti. This international medical elective will prove to be an invaluable experience not only because I can finally contribute in a direct way to the care of Haitians, but also because I will be able to develop medical skills less reliant on modern technology, and become exposed to diseases not generally encountered in the US because of eradication, or advanced medicine. Furthermore, it will allow me to foster my understanding of the interaction between health, society, culture and environmental issues.

I grew up around the Haitian culture, but have never been able to visit the land of my parents, grandparents, and family. I hope to use this visit as a way to get closer to my heritage, and as a way to grow as a future physician in my medical practices, and learn how I can help the country in the future. This trip will only be a step in a long path that I hope to take when I become a physician in about a year -- to provide medical care to underserved communities, in Haiti, the US, and around the world.

This trip will allow me the opportunity to learn the best ways to provide medical care to underserved communities, and the specific types of care that's needed. Unfortunately, resources are limited, thus I must cover my own cost for the trip. I humbly request your assistance in accomplishing this project. Any donation and/or share is appreciated, and will truly be used to fund a life-changing experience!
