PCCP: Help deze kinderen veilig naar school gaan!

Hallo lieve medemensjes,

In mei 2022 trok ik op avontuur naar Oeganda. Paul Osillon, de oprichter van Palissa Children's Concern Project, ontdekte mijn Workaway profiel en nodigde me uit zijn project te versterken. PCCP zet zich in voor de talloze straat- en weeskinderen en andere die getroffen zijn door de onoverkomelijke armoede die heerst in de rurale gebieden van Oost-Oeganda. In het gebied Budaka leeft maar liefst 57´% van de mensen onder de absolute armoedegrens (minder dan één dollar per dag!). Door de hoge kostprijs van onderwijs draait deze armoedecirkel generaties lang almaar door. Paul kon de hopeloze situatie niet langer aanzien voor zijn community en besloot een samenwerking op te richten met de Nawugalo Nursery and Primary School, gunstig gelegen tussen de vele straatarme dorpen. Hij gaat op zoek naar wezen en kinderen op straat en in hele arme dorpen en degene die gewoon te veel potentieel hebben om educatieloos rond te dwalen neemt hij op in de school.

De klaslokaaltjes: drie zijn nog gemaakt uit hout, de andere zeven uit steen.

Aangezien vele leerlingen geen ouders hebben of de schoolkosten niet kunnen betalen, ziet de school dit voor velen door de vingers. Op lange termijn heeft dit echter schadelijke effecten en kunnen ze niet langer de leerkrachten een deftig loon voorzien en de slaapzalen onderhouden of uitbreiden. Ook de hygiëne wordt hierdoor verwaarloosd wat dan weer een impact heeft op de medische gezondheid van de leerlingen. En je kan je waarschijnlijk wel al inbeelden: ook voor medicatie heeft de school geen reservefonds om geld uit te putten.

Intussen hebben 215 kinderen een beter leven gevonden op de school en ze zijn Paul daar eindeloos dankbaar voor. Hij zou er dan ook graag nog bijnemen, maar ook dit zou snoeien betekenen in de kwaliteit van onderwijs en levensstandaard voor de anderen.

Ik verloor mijn hartje bij deze mensen. Nooit heb ik zo'n diepgaande vorm van altruïsme gezien en ik wil er dan ook alles aandoen om deze organisatie bij te staan. Ik zamelde reeds geld in voor elektriciteit aan te leggen in de school, zodat wanneer de avond valt (reeds tussen 18h en 19h) de leerlingen hun huiswerk kunnen maken en om te voorkomen dat ze buiten op slangen zouden trappen. Hierna wordt de volgende grote stap een hek bouwen rond de school zodat de draden niet worden gestolen en de school zo effectief mogelijk kan uitgebreid worden . Het zou zonde zijn dat het weinige geld dat de school kan inzamelen en investeren zo verloren gaat. Hiervoor zouden we dus heel graag geld inzamelen. Mocht ik kunnen financierde ik het hele project en alle leerlingen op mijn eentje, maar ik ben niet rijk genoeg, helaas! Willen jullie me helpen, al is het maar een heel klein beetje?

Hassan en ik. Hassan werd 6 maanden geleden gevonden op straat en werd gelukkig op tijd weggehaald. Vele kinderen vallen namelijk ten prooi aan het drugsmilieu: ze snuiven benzine om high te worden en zo de koude van de nacht niet te voelen. Ik mag er niet aan denken dat dit zou gebeurd zijn met mijn lieve vriendje hier.

Het leven is momenteel nergens gemakkelijk dus de kleinste bedragen zijn zeker al superwelkom. Velen van de kinderen hebben helemaal niks op een t-shirt na dus elke gift wordt eindeloos geapprecieerd! Pallisa Children’s Concern Project – or PCCP for short – is an organisation taking care of orphans and street children and provides education for those who can’t afford the Primary School tuition. In the Budaka district 57% of the total population are living under absolute poverty. Women are the most affected category. That’s why PCCP rather focuses on this disadvantaged group. They started a co-operation with Nawugalo Nursery and Primary School because of its favorable location, surrounded by some extremely poor villages.

The never-ending struggles

Because for some there are no parents or guardians in the picture and for others the parents or guardians aren’t able to pay the school fees, the school is lacking the necessary income to pay the teachers a livable wage, to ameliorate the conditions of the dormitory or expand it for the increasing number of homeless pupils they try to take care of. Because of the poor conditions, it’s hard to maintain the health of the boarding children. You can imagine that also medical care is sometimes not affordable for the school.

Breaking the chains of poverty is never easy and in Uganda it's even harder because of the high price of education. For many people it's not possible to pay the school fees for Primary School, let alone those for Secundary School or University, though this is possibly the only way of ameliorate the life standards of the family.

The need of support

Paul Osillon, the founder of PCCP, has been seeing his community struggle with this endless situation for generations and decided to take matters into his own hands. In co-operation with the Nawugalo Primary School he started to look after children who lost their parents, live on the streets or simply don't have the money to attend school. Already 215 pupils he took underneath his wings and a lot more children are waiting in line. Due to the limited recourses, they currently can't take in more or they would reduce the quality of education and living standards of those who already live and/or attempt school there.

Helping PCCP helps improving so many lives for so many years. The organisation has come a long way from where it began and still has a long one to go. Currently they gathered enough funding to get electricity in the school so during evening and night time the children can make their homework and walk safely to the restroom. The next step will be to get up a fence around to secure the improving accomodation. Step by step PCCP works on long term solutions for a better Uganda, rewarded by the most beautiful, priceless smiles in the whole world.

I think life is hard everywhere at this time, so we're really grateful for the smallest amount you're able to miss! As most of them don't have anything at all, very little is still a fortune for them.
