What would a peaceful community look like?
This is the question that started a year-long journey to finding peace at Centennial High School. Ms. Hutchison and Ms. Hindes have worked at Centennial collectively for nine years and are looking at growing peace practices at Centennial.
What does this trip look like?
Thursday - Travel to Atlanta Georgia.
Friday - Start Non-Violence training at Southern Christian Leadership Conference
- Evening debrief with the group in Circle at the hotel
Saturday - Finish Non-Violence training
- Evening debrief with the group in circle thinking of ways to disperse information and bring this back to Champaign Urbana community
Sunday - Travel back home
Students will participate in Circles after each day to debrief on the materials from nonviolence training. These Circles will be lead by two Restorative Justice practitioners that are skilled in developing community, finding common values, and holding space for others. It is through our connection to each other that we become richer.
Our Vision for a More Hopeful Future: It is our hope that students become advocates for peace. They see that violence is not the answer and become active participants in interrupting violence and choose critical reflection. Students will also walk away with an analysis of systemic oppression, tools to deeper critical reflection, and specific strategies for nonviolence.
We are not here to save kids.
We don't believe this trip will save students, because students don't need saving. They need the tools we have access to. In this case the tool of non-violence training and the community that will come from this pilgrimage.
