Supporting Pedro’s Passion on the Path of Teaching

The Journey without Regrets:

“Life is about making choices.” That is what Pedro has always told his students throughout his 49 years of teaching. As for himself, Pedro has never regretted his choice of being a teacher, which his whole life has been dedicated to so that no one would be left behind on the path of gaining knowledge. And even at the age of 74, Pedro’s lifelong passion and commitment to education resists dying out.

His students represent those from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, the US, and South America. Wherever they come from, in his eyes, all of them are his “children”, who regard him as a father, grandpa, or a friend being there to encourage and advise them in times of hardship. In China, Pedro is called “土豪”, which means a wealthy man - not in a material way, but his endless patience, concern, and love for his “children.”

All his students enjoy such “treasure,” and so do his former teaching assistants (TAs) in China. His TAs have learned from him how to make a good lesson plan, correct papers and give feedback, make a rubric, etc. Some of his former Chinese TAs are now working as English teachers, hoping to be like him and continuing to pass the “treasure” to their students, the future of each student’s home country and the whole wide world.

Facing a Difficult Battle:

Recently, his life took an unexpected turn when he was diagnosed with prostatic cancer. Facing this daunting health challenge, Pedro is grappling with the physical and emotional toll of the disease and the financial burden it brings him. Without any immediate family, the burden of medical expenses looms heavily upon him to cover the escalating medical expenses that surpass his meager pension. Pedro’s years of selflessness and dedication to education have touched the lives of hundreds through his teaching and volunteer work, which motivates us to help him go through this challenging period.
