UPenn Basketball: Road to Nationals
Donation protected
Goal: The goal of this fund is to help send the University of Pennsylvania Men’s Club Basketball Team to the NIRSA National Club Basketball Tournament held at the Ohio State University from April 22-24. We consider it of the utmost importance that Club Basketball be need blind. We would never exclude a player from the team due to his inability to contribute financially, and with your help, any player, regardless of his financial situation, would have an opportunity to go to Nationals.
About us: Our team was founded just last year, so we are still working hard to establish ourselves as an official team that is recognized by our University. Every one of our players is incredibly passionate about the sport of basketball, and values this community highly from both an athletic and social standpoint. Currently, we are not recognized as a sports club by Penn due to the arduous process of obtaining club status. Therefore, not only do we not receive funding, but we also must use all of our dues to pay for practice space, leaving us with no way to pay for the journey to Nationals.
Why Nationals is so important: At this point, we are doing everything we can to obtain more recognition from Penn. In February, we made a big statement about our strength as a team by coming in second in the NIRSA region 1 tournament. Given that it is only our second year as a team, it was huge for us to make it so far against seven other established teams from much bigger schools, including the University of Maryland and James Madison University. Recently, we had to turn down an invitation from the University of Massachusetts to participate in its NIRSA region 1 tournament due to monetary restrictions. We hope we aren’t forced to do the same for Nationals, and with your help, we won’t have to. Going to Nationals is the next big step for our team and it would greatly elevate our status in the eyes of the University. We are good enough to make a statement at Nationals, and doing so would provide a huge upswell in support for us.
Thank you for all of your help and support. We cannot express how much this initiative means to us, and we are so grateful for any funds we receive. Help us on the road to nationals!
