Using music and technology to reconnect with the Natural World
Hello, My name is James Kellerman and I am a composer, woodwind performer, yoga teacher and workshop facillitator in Minneapolis Minnesota. I want to invite you to join me in creating a recording of my 2008 string quartet composition "Pepin Moon" and also create an accompanying video that celebrates and reconnects us to the beauty and spirit of place, specifically Lake Pepin in Southeastern Minnesota/Southwestern Wisconsin.
We are living in a time of great stress and challenge. Distraction from our devices, social media and technology in general is at a fever pitch. I composed "Pepin Moon" for string quartet while living in Lake City, Mn. My canoe was always ready on the shore of Lake Pepin (22 miles of the Mississippi River, up to 2 miles wide, between Minnesota and Wisconsin). I went for a couple night time paddles in summer and early fall 2008and was inspired by the clarity of the full moon as I was sitting in the middle of the lake. "Pepin Moon" was born from those moments of awe.
I revised the music last summer (2019) and am asking for your help to record the new version of the piece in the recording studio and at the same time create a video that captures the beauty and awe of my inspiration. My vision is to create a multi dimensional experience of sound and image that reminds us of our shared common connections. Through the music and beauty of Lake Pepin we find a deeper connection to each other and our highest, centered self - beyond politics, and beyond the distraction of our devices.
The fundraising goal of $9,250 will be used to pay the quartet musicians, pay for studio time, engineering and mixing. (Daria Adams of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra has agreed to play and assemble the quartet). Nick Clausen (Emmy award winning videographer) has already spent 3 days compiling footage some of which you can see in the video on this page. I am including a portion of the budget for myself as a composer and as a producer.

Celebrating the beauty of Lake Pepin would be incomplete without also acknowledging the threat of sedimentation that has been slowly but steadily filling the lake and altering it's natural cycles and rhythms. To ground this artistic statement in the present moment, Nick and I will be collaborating with the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance to add a 90 to 120 second coda or addendum to the artistic music video. This coda or end cap will be a silent witness, a very simple and direct offering of before and after images highlighting the challenges of sedimentation.
The Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance has been working for 11 years to help bring awareness to the health of the lake and I am grateful to them for their collaboration in planning this video as well as helping me understand the issue better.

Your support will not only help get this music video produced, but will also support and affirm my work of using music to help heal ourselves and our fractured world. The video footage is in the can, the music is written, with your support I intend to have the final video and recording done and online by spring 2021 and ready to be performed live with video projection at at least one event if not more in the summer, fall and beyond.. Let's focus on being able to come together in person by then. Thank you so very much for considering donating to this project.
Blessings, James Kellerman
