In memoria di Giuseppe Fortunato [Peppone]

L'unica cosa che le persone tendono a non dimenticare è come qualcuno o qualcosa le faccia sentire. Un segno che ognuno di noi decide come conservare e portare avanti, anche di fronte il vuoto irrazionale di cui ci riempiamo quando la mancanza di qualcuno o qualcosa ci mostra fragili e persi. Un vuoto di cui svuotarsi prima di riempirsi nuovamente.

Un mese fa abbiamo tutti perso un amico che viveva amando e sorridendo, mettendo gli altri davanti a se stesso. Pensando all'impatto che Giuseppe ha e avrebbe avuto sulla vita di chiunque ci entrasse e fosse entrato in contatto, non importa quanto vicino o lontano, apre gli occhi e fa venir voglia di ripartire.

In Zambia, nel distretto di Chipangali, fra il Malawi ad est e il Congo ad ovest, la metà della popolazione ha meno di 18 anni e ancor più sono i bambini che ne hanno meno di 9. Le comunità imperversano in situazioni di estrema povertà e fragilità. Da alcuni anni ho avuto la fortuna e onore di poter veder partire, poter coltivare e riuscire a prender parte direttamente a vari programmi ed iniziative che danno futuro ad un numero incalcolabile di questi ragazzi costruendo asili e scuole, portando acqua pulita e beni di prima necessità a tutta la comunità locale e fornendo assistenza medica con scorte di medicinali e strutture (ospedali, cliniche, centri di riabilitazione) a tutte le famiglie che dovessero averne bisogno.

Entrando nello specifico della presente missione, fra le ONG presenti sul territorio africano meno della metà si occupano di educazione e meno del 10% di educazione primaria. Nell'ambito del "Progetto Insegnanti e Scuole Materne" dell'associazione Santina Gusmini e dell'organizzazione Pamodzi Ndi Ana registrata in Zambia, negli ultimi anni sono state costruite 4 nuove scuole, a fronte delle 9 inizialmente individuate, che potessero diventare un punto di riferimento ed aggregazione per interi villaggi. Allo stesso tempo siamo stati in grado di formare 18 nuovi insegnanti che potessero prendersi cura degli studenti e offrire loro standard educativi adeguati.

Per ricordare ed onorare Giuseppe e il ragazzo che era e sarebbe diventato, vogliamo raccogliere fondi per:

1. Costruire nuove scuole primarie da inserire nel progetto esistente

2. Formare nuovo personale scolastico competente

3. Portare acqua pulita a circa 10000 persone

Il costo di una scuola si aggira intorno ai 20.000 euro a cui sarà, successivamente, possibile aggiungere nuovi fondi per i vari corsi di formazione (9.0000 euro per un corso della durata di un anno che coinvolga 9 insegnanti che verranno inseriti come formatori in una/alcune delle scuole già esistenti), la costruzione di pozzi d'acqua (4.000 euro circa) e/o la copertura di qualsiasi altra spesa accessoria. L'obiettivo sarebbe raccogliere la somma necessaria per poter partire con gli scavi nel mese di Aprile 2025 e riuscire a completare i lavori ed inaugurare la struttura per il nuovo anno accademico.

A bordo, e parte integrante, di questa missione di cambiamento, c'è l'associazione Viggiano Vibes APS costituita da amici e ragazzi di Viggiano, un piccolo paese della Basilicata, che si propone di incentivare e promuovere lo sviluppo locale sostenibile di questa piccola realtà a partire da un attivismo collettivo senza eguali. Giuseppe era socio fondatore dell'associazione e credeva fermamente in questi valori, senza perdere occasione di mostrarlo.

People will never forget how someone or something made them feel. A mark that each one of us chooses to keep and carry forward, even when the absence of someone or something makes us feel lost. An emptiness that we have to let go of before we can start living again.

A month ago, we all lost a friend who lived by loving and smiling, always thinking about others before himself. Reflecting upon the impact that Giuseppe had on the lives of everyone who crossed his path, no matter how close you were with him, opens our eyes and makes us want to rise and walk again.

In Zambia, in the Chipangali district, between Malawi and Congo, half of the population is under 18 years old, and even more are children under the age of 9. The communities live in conditions of extreme poverty and vulnerability. For the past 6 years now, I had the privilege of seeing and contributing to the start of a project that gives a future to a huge number of these children by building preschools and schools, bringing clean water and essential goods to the local community, and providing medical assistance with supplies, hospitals and facilities for all families in need.

Less than half of the NGOs operating in Africa focus on education, and, among these, less than 10% focus on primary education. As part of the “Teachers and Primary Schools Project”, under the Santina Gusmini Association and the Pamodzi Ndi Ana Association, over the last 4 years, we have built four new schools, out of the nine initially identified and commissioned, which became a point of reference and gathering for entire villages. At the same time, we have been able to train 18 new teachers who can now take care of students and offer them adequate education.

To remember and honor Giuseppe and the man he was and eventually would have become, we want to raise funds to:

1. Build new primary schools to fit into the existing project

2. Train new teaching staff

3. Bring clean water to around 10000 people

The cost of a school is set to approximately 20.000 euros, and additional funds can be later allocated to academic training programs for the school staff (9.000 euros for a year-long course involving 9 teachers), to drill water wells (4.000 euros for each borehole), and other related expenses. The goal is to raise the necessary amount to begin the construction work in April 2025 and complete the school in time for the new academic year.
