Per la famiglia di Fabio

All’improvviso il suo cuore si è fermato. L’arrivo dei paramedici è stato inutile. Se ne è andato così, a quarantadue anni compiuti a marzo, lasciando una moglie e tre bambine. Fabio era un uomo onesto e un lavoratore instancabile. Ma era soprattutto un uomo dalla battuta sempre pronta, capace di gestire con un sorriso anche le situazioni più difficili e le troppe sfide che la vita gli aveva lanciato: peripezie lavorative; la disabilità di una delle bambine; una delle figlie che si è ammalata di leucemia (poi fortunatamente guarita!) a poche settimane di vita; la disoccupazione durante il covid, con il costante pensiero di dover provvedere al benessere della sua famiglia; e per ultimo, un tumore (rivelatosi benigno) della moglie, che ha dovuto superare una neurochirurgia molto delicata, rischiosa e invasiva pochi mesi fa. E che ancora oggi, mentre scrivo e Fabio purtroppo non c’è più, è in convalescenza.

Di tutte queste sfide, Fabio e la moglie erano capaci di ridere. Di arrabbiarsi e rattristarsi, certo, ma anche di trovare il lato comico – e talvolta ridicolo – di quel “perché ancora a noi?” che li ha perseguitati per i quasi venticinque anni della loro relazione.

Ora lei è rimasta da sola, a dover garantire sia il benessere economico che affettivo di tre dolcissime bambine. La più grande compirà 13 anni fra poche settimane; le più piccole ne faranno rispettivamente 5 e 7 questo autunno.

Noi, la loro famiglia, stiamo facendo il possibile per fornire sostegno pratico e psicologico. Ma siamo consapevoli che non basta. Gli aiuti statali e pubblici non bastano. Abbiamo allora deciso di lanciare questa raccolta – non solo di solidarietà, ma anche di umanità.

Queste bambine hanno il diritto non solo di sopravvivere, ma anche di vivere. Di studiare. Di cercare aiuto. Di curarsi.  Hanno il diritto di vivere una vita dignitosa, di crescere coltivando i propri talenti.

Tutte e tre hanno il diritto di chiedere alla collettività un aiuto concreto. Questo aiuto non colmerà il vuoto immenso lasciato dal padre, ma – questa è la nostra speranza – potrà contribuire a farle crescere come giovani donne indipendenti e, un giorno, felici.

Suddenly his heart stopped. The arrival of paramedics was useless. He went like this, at the age of forty-two in March, leaving behind a wife and three little girls. Fabio was an honest man and a tireless worker. But above all, he was a man with an ever-ready wit, able to handle with a smile even the most difficult situations and too many challenges that life had thrown at him: the bankruptcy of the family business; the birth of a little girl with disabilities; a daughter who fell ill with leukemia at just a few weeks of age; unemployment during covid, with the constant thought of having to provide for his family; and lastly, a tumor (later revealed to be benign) in his wife, who had to go through very delicate and invasive neurosurgery a few months ago. And who is still recovering today, as I write and Fabio is sadly gone.

Of all these challenges, Fabio and his wife were able to laugh. Of getting angry and sad, sure, but also of finding the comic -- and sometimes ridiculous -- side of that "why us again?" that haunted them for the nearly twenty-five years of their relationship.

Now she is left alone, having to ensure both the financial and emotional well-being of three sweet little girls. The oldest will turn 13 in a few weeks; the youngest will be 5 and 7 respectively this fall.

We, their family, are doing what we can to provide practical and psychological support. But we are aware that it is not enough. State and public aid is not enough. So we decided to launch this fundraising-not only out of solidarity, but also out of humanity.

These girls have the right not only to survive, but also to live. To study. To seek help. To care for themselves. The 7-year-old girl has the right to continue her journey in neuropsychiatry. The other two have the right to live a dignified life, to grow up cultivating their talents.

All three have the right to ask the community for concrete help. This help will not fill the immense void left by their father, but -this is our hope- it may help them grow up as independent and, one day, happy young women.
