THE ASK

 

I’m a recovering addict and alcoholic, with 3+ years of continuous sobriety, seeking to become a Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC). Will you aid me in my mission to provide support and advocacy for addicts through personal 1-on-1 coaching? I am committed to this work long-term, and I’m pursuing immediate enrollment to deliver exceptional services by the beginning of summer.

WHY THIS, WHY ME?

 

Addiction is a progressive disease that harms the person afflicted and everyone around them. This isn’t breaking news. We see the effects of addiction in all of our communities and in many more of our relationships than we’re sometimes willing to admit.

 

I struggled with alcoholism and addiction for over 15 years. The last few years, before getting sober, were devastating. The epitome of agony. My existence was so small. Getting high dominated my life. Many relationships deteriorated.

 

I wanted to stop. I believed myself to be an intelligent, ambitious, hard-working, 'good' person, so it shouldn’t be a problem. I was the exception to the rule, and my brilliance would save me. Yet, repeatedly I tried to ‘pull myself up by my bootstraps' and get clean, and to my horror–I couldn’t. I fell deeper and deeper into despair with every new attempt and failure. Eventually, I believed myself broken, unfixable, and of no value. I felt profound hopelessness and contemplated suicide regularly. I was untethered.

 

Entering a recovery program saved my life. I no longer had to be alone with my illness. I was given the tools, the community, and the love I needed to put the substances down and begin to heal. Today, I have options. I have a life worth living and the opportunity to strive toward my authentic self. I am of service to others, have aspirations, am building an abundant life, and contribute to society.

 

This isn’t just a career move for me–it’s personal.

 

I’m still very active in my immediate recovery community and continue to learn, but there’s more knowledge and experience to master. This certification will enhance my coaching toolbox, provide new insights into various recovery methodologies, and grant me access to potentially life-saving resources. It will also expand my professional opportunities to work with recovery facilities and programs and allow me to be of greater service to those who struggle as I once did.
