Petey Wheels

My name is Pete Mayer, aka Petey Wheels, and this is my story. Has someone ever told you that you can't do something? Because someone once told me I couldn't ride a bike 223 miles from Boca Raton to the Southernmost Point of Key West FL, in under 24 hours.  What started as friendly competition, has grown into an opportunity to raise awareness about a cause which I hold close to my heart. Just over a year ago, my family suffered the loss of my younger brother Nick. Nick struggled with mental health issues, which ultimately lead to his suicide. This is a huge issue in today's society that needs immediate attention, and seems to always be swept under the rug. Our goal through this fundraiser is to bring awareness to mental health issues in today's youth, and support suicide prevention programs that can help save a life.

All funds raised through Team Wheels campaign will be donated to the Jordan Porco Foundation & the Nick Mayer Memorial Fund of the Hartford Foundation for Public giving. The Nick Mayer Memorial fund was established in memory of Nick. The fund supports a variety of non-profit organizations, with priority given to youth and high school ice hockey programs and "skaterships" for players exhibiting a passion for the sport and a commitment to playing hockey in high school. Hockey played a huge role in both Nick and I's lives as kids. In 2015 our team the EO Smith/Tolland Bucks won the Connecticut high school hockey state championship. This was one of our fondest memories together, and we want to make sure all youth have the same opportunity to experience the thrill of being a champion. 

Join me on my journey as I train to become an elite athlete and prove the doubters wrong. Together, we can accomplish any feat. I will complete this ride, in under 24 hours... and we will champion mental health.
