Save Parker
Donation protected
We are trying to raise funds to save Parker, a lonely, hungry, abandoned dog. The money is for the Charles Smithgall Humane Society (a 501c3) to fund Parker’s medical needs and recovery.
Three nights ago – Scott and I decided to help the lonely, desperate little pitbull girl who had been abandoned in Adams Park. Thank you to everyone who has supported the efforts to rescue Parker. Ben and Jane offered space in their back yard. Several brought food and toys. Others offered advice and encouragement. Some even offered financial support to for Parkers medical expenses. Your support and encouragement has meant so much already.
Scott and I have learned a lot from this process. First of all – Parker is one of hundreds of dear, sweet discarded pets that need our help. Thankfully, we don’t encounter them all every day – that would be exhausting – but we did encounter Parker, alone, neglected, suffering and begging for help - plea too desperate to ignore. Shelters are full and resources are scarce. So, we brought her to our family with the goal of satisfying her immediate needs and finding a more permanent solution for her. Scott took her to the vet, got her shots, rid her of fleas, confirmed that she has no chip, and learned that she has heartworms, is about 5 years old and appears to have been used as a puppy mill and discarded. While Parker is not yet strong enough to survive the heartworm treatment, she will eventually need $700 to $2,000 in treatments – depending on who you ask and what specific treatment is specified.
We have also enjoyed getting to know Parker a little better. I have to say, I was initially very intimidated to offer a ride to a hungry, unfamiliar pitbull. But she’s actually turned out to be a loving, sweet, gentle creature. Parker struggles with deciding to focus on much needed food – or much needed attention. Her tail constantly wags, and her favorite position is - head in lap. She has a calm, quiet, submissive demeanor.
We have, with the help of neighbors Ben and Jane fostered little Parker for as long as we can. On Sunday, we are placing her with a small no-kill shelter a couple hours north of Atlanta. In doing so, we have agreed to contribute to the expenses related to getting her back up to weight and health. We estimate a cost of $1,500 - and since so many of you have offered to contribute – now is your chance! Scott paid her initial bill of $300 – and we’re happy to cover that expense – but we could use some help getting Parker the heartworm treatment and getting her weight back up. I'm not sure how soon this funding will be needed, but tomorrow - we introduce her to her new, less temporary home.
If you are able to contribute – we could use the help – and Parker will stand a much better chance of landing in a happy, loving home. Thank you for your consideration.
