Pfeiffer Walz Residency in France

Welcome to the GoFundMe page for Ryan M Pfeiffer + Rebecca Walz

We are collaborative artists living and working in the city of Chicago. Sharing a domestic partnership, we have maintained our collaborative drawing practice for over the past 4 years. To view our bio as well as more works please check out our Website .

Drawing from our research into prehistoric & ancient art, historical erotica and archeo-anthropology our art works synthesize concerns about sex, death, myth and transformation. While utilizing strategies of reproduction, sourcing and bibliographing, our resulting drawings veer between silent hieroglyphic frieze and dense depictions of orgiastic revelry. Only working on the drawings simultaneously, we view the act of collaboration as a dissolution of our individual identities. We envision these works as documents that coalesce our combined research and rendering. To view more writing about our practice please view this Link

“Identity dissolves in [PfeifferWalz's] collaborative space of myth, dream and magic. In their project, the dissolution on one subject into another is relatable – historical correspondences ground their ambitions with clear nuance of mark and form.” -Jesse Bransford, Black Mirror 0

“This duo lose themselves and are rediscovered in new mystically erotic formations through their collaborative drawing process” - Newcity Art Reviews

“Their repurposed, blended imagery has all the tellings of an expert bibliography. The compositions are stages on which the duo’s investigations into alchemy, ancient art and eroticism are performed as drawing” - Collin Pressler

This summer we have been graciously selected to be Collaborative Artists-in-Residence at The Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program in Brittany, France - supported in part by the Maryland Institute College of Art. For the duration of our residency we will reside within the picturesque town of Léhon - situated along the Rance River - located a short distance from the northwestern coast of France. Once there, we will be given housing and a studio within the Medieval Abbey and gardens.

The Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program and other residency opportunities exist to invite artists, academicians, curators, and all manner of creative people for a time and space away from their usual environment and obligations. They provide a time of reflection, research, presentation and/or production. They also allow an individual to explore his/her practice within another community; meeting new people, using new materials, experiencing life in a new location. Art residencies emphasize the importance of meaningful and multi-layered cultural exchange and immersion into another culture.

We feel very fortunate to have been selected for this unique opportunity to live and work abroad within this idyllic and culturally rich setting. It is here where we will have the gift of unobstructed time to continue both our research and the material development of our collaborative practice. This will be a significant occasion for us discover new avenues and histories to appy to our work that will mostly influence us for years to come. See more images of the location of the residency Here .

"The village of Léhon, which grew up at the site of a strategic fort used by the Romans, bears the coveted distinction "Petite Cité de Caractère" and is graced by a medieval abbey and its gardens and guarded by the ruins of the oldest fortress in Brittany."

Our location in Léhon is a 15-minute walk along the river from Brittany's well-traveled town of Dinan. This medieval hilltop town contains many historic structures some of which date back to the 13th century. Major historical attractions include the Jacobins Theatre dating from 1224, the Gothic St Malo's Church, Chateau de Dinan and the Romanesque St Saviour's Basilica. It is in this town where we will seek to engage our research with the historical sites, access materials & supplies for our work, purchase groceries at the local open air market and enjoy the local fare of crêpes & cidre de bretagne.

Concluding our time at the residency, The Alfred and Trafford Klots International Program will host an exhibition to be prospectively staged in the Abby Saint – Magloire in Léhon - where it is anticipated that many from the region will be in attendance. Upon our return to the states, the works generated while overseas will also result in a solo-exhibition hosted by Hobart and William Smith College in Geneva, New York in late September.

This fundraising effort is intended to assist in supporting our 2 months overseas along with our exhibition opportunities.  While abroad we will have to provide for our own meals, travel expenses, art supplies & materials, shipment and transport of artworks back to the States - as well as to facilitate the production of our upcoming exhibitions both in France and New York.

If you're interested in donating, please see our Reward Options below. Also know that you are not limited to these options and can donate whichever amount you wish.

We take flight for France at the end of May! So please help us spread the word of this wonderful opportunity by sharing our GoFundMe page. Please know that any donations to assist us in our travels, art production, and exhibitions will be greatly appreciated. No donation is too small, every little bit is very helpful and meaningful to us.

Thank you all for taking the time to read about our upcoming residency as we are truly grateful for the interest and support of our project!

With much graditude,

Ryan M Pfeiffer + Rebecca Walz
