Well, folks, I finally got the call. Looks like 2020 is coming around.
My name is Kelsey Butt and I am a 29-year-old non-binary person living in Toronto, ON. I'm originally from Labrador and moved here about 3 years ago to find work. I eventually landed a job at the Inside Out LGBT Film Festival in the spring of 2018, and I have been working there ever since. It's been an important part of my job and life to support my community when I can, and now I'm asking for some of that support to come my way.
I've been on the waiting list for top surgery for well over a year now, but I've wanted it for so much longer. I didn't think there was a chance I'd get in this year, but some things have shifted with the Ontario Health Insurance Plan (OHIP) agreements, and now there are openings that they're looking to fill before the end of the year. I haven't gotten my actual surgery date yet, but I will in the next few weeks.
Although OHIP will take care of a huge chunk of the cost of this surgery, I will still be responsible for the last bit, which still falls in the cosmetic category. This amount needs to be paid 3 weeks prior to my surgery date, and if they give me the opportunity to get in within the next month or so, I'll need to have the money ready to roll. I'm looking for help covering these costs as well as some extra costs I will endure during my 6+ week of recovery. I won't be able to lift my arms over my head so no driving, cooking, or throwing my hands in the air like I just don't care.
This will be a life-changing surgery for me. I've struggled with dysphoria since a young age, and it has affected me both mentally and physically. I have been binding for about 5 years now, which has led to shoulder and back injuries, as well as harming my lungs. This will be a brand new start for me to live healthier and happier.
If you know me, you know this year has been quite a rough one for me. Due to COVID-19, I lost a decent amount of extra work, which was my original plan for covering the costs of this surgery. That, plus the loss of my main support person, who was going to help me during my recovery, means that the surgery is going to look different than I had planned. I'm going to need help from my friends and my community.
Every bit of support helps. Even if a toonie or a nice message I can read during my recovery.
I appreciate you taking the time to read all of this and hope you are all doing well out there in pandemic land.
