Playground Coffee Shop Workers Solidarity
Retention Fund + Boycott Campaign
A. Workers from The Playground Coffee Shop establishment located in the Bedford Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, New York are launching a Workers Solidarity and Retention Fund + Boycott Campaign.
B. This wide call for solidarity, fundraising, and boycott comes as a last resort tactic for the several workers who, upon request for information and accountability from the management, were laid off or terminated.
C.We are urgently raising funds for housing, groceries, personal care necessities, and other supplies to sustain former Playground Coffee Shop employees during their search for new wage labor & employment opportunities.
D. Some of the myriad causes for alarm and criticisms of the management of Playground Coffee Shop include
[1] Multiple late-pay occurrences with little to or no warning until day-of-pay.
[2] Mismanagement and poor to no communication of tip inclusion, splits, and taxation.
[3] Attempted worker division and manipulation.
[4] Abuse of identity politics that advance corporate brand partnerships (which has become the bedrock of the operation) that, from a long term financial standpoint, solely benefit the management and ownership.
E. For a business that prides itself on their exceptional inclusion to “community” and “mutual aid” we call shame. For a management and owner to boast the workplace as “family-oriented” and “safe” while choosing to isolate and confuse staff and be more concerned with profit over people we call shame.
