Phil Shapiro needs some help with medical bills

Donation protected

Phil Shapiro, who works at Takoma Park Maryland Library, is in need of a liver transplant - UPDATE! Phil received his transplant on April 28th! This GoFundMe has been set up to help cover both anticipated and unanticipated expenses. Phil is immensely grateful that MedStar Georgetown University Hospital (https://www.medstarhealth.org/services/medstar-georgetown-transplant-institute) is strongly experienced at doing liver transplants and the hospital has accepted him as a patient. Medical care of this kind can come with many costs and this GoFundMe will assist Phil in absorbing those costs.

Background information about Phil:

Over the years, Phil has received several national awards and recognitions for his community service work -- from Community Technology Centers' Network (CTCNet) in 2002, from Red Hat in 2017, and the Library Journal Movers and Shakers Award, recognizing individuals who are moving the library profession forward. The Linux company, Red Hat, recognized Phil for his passionate open source advocacy, writing more than 50 articles for the Opensource.com web site.
Locally, Phil has received an Azalea Award (for mentoring youth), and the annual Spirit of Play Award, for his support of the play movement in Takoma Park.
