Philippine Cricket 2022 T20 World Cup Qualifier

Hi everyone,

My name is Henry Tyler, an Australian-based Filipino Cricketer and Head Coach of the Philippine National Cricket Team.

In just under a month, the Philippine Cricket Team will be travelling to Oman to compete for the remaining two spots in the ICC T20 World Cup to be held in Australia later this year.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our squad to represent the Philippines on the international stage, and we need your help!

The road to Oman began in December 2017 when the Philippines won its first World Cup Qualifying tournament against Japan, Indonesia and South Korea. Following that, we travelled to Port Moresby in April 2019 to compete in another World Cup Qualifier against Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu. While we went down to the host nation, a win against Vanuatu ranked us #1 in the East Asia Pacific region and booked us a spot in the final World Cup Qualifier in Oman, where we will battle it out against the top teams in the world, including Nepal (ranked 12th), Ireland (13th), UAE (15th), Oman (17th), Canada (22nd), Germany (32nd) & Bahrain (33rd). How amazing is that!!

Despite our success over the last five years, Philippine Cricket does not receive the same level of funding that these other nations receive. This means that our players are not contracted professional cricketers and, in order to represent the Philippines, we must take unpaid leave from our work in the Philippines or here in Australia. While some of the costs of travelling to and playing in Oman will be subsidised by the International Cricket Council (ICC), the remainder will need to be covered by the Philippine Cricket Association and individual players.

COVID has impacted physical preparations for both our Philippine-based and Australian-based squad. Yet, restrictions have done nothing to diminish the passion our Australian-based players have to represent their families, their heritage and the Philippines with pride. Our Australian-based squad are located right around the country, and have met up and trained as a group whenever border restrictions have allowed, funding the costs of travel and accommodation for various training camps themselves. The culture, friendship and meaning which this group has created is nothing short of spectacular, and we cannot wait to show you all on the big stage just what this means to not only us as players but to all of our families and the history which this event will create for developing cricket in the Philippines.
