Philippine Super Typhoon Rai Appeal
Help families and communities affected by Super Typhoon Rai (known locally as Typhoon Odette) in the Philippines. Help them to have a safe place to call home this Christmas. Kanlungan, in partnership with Dara Bascara Trust and Southeast and East Asian Center (SEEAC), is fundraising for the typhoon survivors in the Philippines. We are working closely with Damayang Migrante in Negros, who are preparing to respond in the different areas of the Philippines affected by Super Typhoon Rai. We urgently need your help to reach people who are worst affected.
What you need to know
Super Typhoon Rai, the most powerful tropical cyclone to hit the Philippines this year, has killed 208 people as of 20 December 2021, according to the Philippine National Police. Central Visayas has the highest number of deaths, followed by Caraga, Western Visayas, Northern Mindanao, and Eastern Visayas.
According to the Philippine Department of Social Welfare and Development's most recent report, the super typhoon has affected 1.8 million people across nine regions in the Philippines.
In the direct path of the storm, 3.8 million people are already living below the poverty line.
Typhoon Rai rapidly strengthened from a Category 1 to a Category 5-equivalent storm the day before landfall. It first made landfall in Siargao before moving west through the Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, and Palawan. It has made landfall nine times in the Philippines between 16 and 17 December, affecting a total of seven provinces.
