Speech Therapy in the Philippines
Donation protected
Trysh Libao and I are raising money for our capstone project in the Philippines! We will be providing speech therapy services to children with physical and cognitive impairments who are unable to communicate verbally.
Our mission is to introduce and facilitate the use of low-tech Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) devices (i.e., communication board, communication book) to the children at Pedya Kamp, a summer camp for children with special needs. Most of the campers are from poverty-stricken areas that have never had access to speech and language services. AAC intervention will provide them with the means to convey messages on a communication board/book - a simple, accessible, and convenient system designed for functional communication.
The inspiration for our capstone project stemmed primarily from our participation in Chapman University's AAC Camp earlier this summer. This project aims to extend AAC services overseas in a similar format. The following link is an overview of Chapman University's Communication Sciences and Disorders AAC Camp:
In order to accomplish this goal, we need to raise at least $6,500 to cover airfare for three separate round-trip flights, equipment, materials, housing, food, and transportation.
Please take the time to consider life without the ability to express your basic wants and needs, to be voiceless, and to be trapped within your own mind. All donations will provide these individuals with the ability to communicate; a basic human right that no one should live without.
