Have you ever found an animal in the city that needed help, and you wanted to help but you didn't know what to do? I've heard that story too many times from too many people, and that's why I'm doing this.
For several years I have been answering calls about baby pigeons, sick pigeons, a pigeon hit by a car, a pigeon entangled in string so that her legs are tied together, a pigeon with a broken wing... I raise them or care for them until they are ready to be released. Unlike NYC, Philadelphia has no dedicated pigeon rescue organization, and the closest wildlife rehabilitation clinic is at least a 30 minute drive from the city. Philly pigeons deserve some local support.
Pigeons sometimes get negative press, which is totally undeserved. They are smart, affectionate, and full of character. Many people keep them as household pets. The worst they ever do is poop on your car, and who are we to hold someone else's poop against them? Don't forget: the beloved white dove of peace is a pigeon too.
I am certified in wildlife capture and transport, so if another type of animal is in trouble, I am equipped to safely capture them and drive them to a wildlife rehabilitation clinic. I have rescued hawks, raccoons, squirrels, seagulls, many types of songbirds, opossums, turtles, even a baby rat.
I am also attempting to do something about the homeless cat problem in SW Philly. I have trapped dozens of cats and kittens and helped get them to foster homes. This is an ongoing battle.
If the fundraiser goes well, the goal is to create a 501(c)(3) charitable organization dedicated to pigeons.
