Photo voice for homeless youth

Donation protected

Youth without homes are often invisible in society.  They enter the streets because they have few alternatives to living in chaotic and often violent homes. Broader society assumes homeless young people are rebelious and delinquenct, but in fact they are resilient as they survive danger and isolation on the streets.

Young people staying at the Urban Peak homeless shelter participated in a photo voice project to share their voices and experiences. They learned photography skills. They took photos of their worlds. They dialogued about the experiences represented in those photos. They created a social action gallary, invited the community and dispelled myths about the abilities of homeless young people.

Researchers studying the photovoice project found youth who participated were more socially connected and more satisfied with their lives. Youth began to see themselves as leaders, as people with valuable voices with something important to say. Yet, not all youth interested were able to participate.

Support additional rounds of photovoice! Your money will allow more homeless young people to learn about photography and social change and to be advocates in their communities. Funds will be used to purchase camaras, print and frame photos for galleries, and promote community awareness using youths' photography.

This project represents a rare opportunity for homeless young people to feel a part of something bigger, to connect with others around a common goal, to feel understood.

Your generosity can fund the voice of a young person.
