Surgery for Pico, a Stray Husky
Donation protected

Pico came to Homeward Bound, Addison County's Humane Society , as a stray last week. He was found in Cornwall, Vermont, where he had been hanging out for a week. He is a young husky, less than two years-old, and underweight. Pico has a badly broken hind leg (femoral fracture) and amputation has been recommended by the veterinarian. The vet believes Pico's leg was broken in one of two ways: he could have been hit by a car some time ago and medical treatment was neglected, or he was kicked very, very hard.
Pico is a sweet and gentle dog. He has an amazing disposition. He is calm and maintains a most wonderful temperament despite his injury and a bacterial infection in both ears. Pico is currently on pain medication as he awaits his surgery. He is not micro-chipped, but we believe he must have had an owner because he has a collar, responds to "sit," and rode very well in the car. So far, no one has come for him.
Pico's amputation is scheduled for February 25; it can't be sooner, as we have to wait seven days before the humane society can legally take ownership. All of his care (diagnostics, pre-surgery treatment, surgery, post surgery care) is expected to cost as much as $3,000. Pico will come back to the shelter after his surgery to heal and will use a sling, thanks to a previous donation. Because he is young, Pico is expected to adjust and retrain his body much more quickly than an older dog having an amputation would.
We at Homeward Bound believe that Pico has a bright future with a loving, caring family. This surgery is paramount to his future and we ask that animal lovers everywhere consider sponsoring his surgery.
On behalf of Pico, please accept our heartfelt thanks for your support!
