Help rebuild the central pier to protect Bluefields Bay and unlock economic opportunities in the community!
The Bluefields, Jamaica community depends on the Caribbean Sea, and specifically the Bluefields Bay, for sustenance and economic vitality. The Bay is a Marine Protected Area (MPA) and is patrolled and managed by the Bluefields Bay Fishermens' Friendly Society (BBFFS) organization.
The BBFFS has managed the Bay for over a decade, enabling baby fish to grow, protecting coral reefs and mangroves, and implementing clean water initiatives - all on a meager budget, yet with good success.
The existing pier at the Bluefields Bay MPA is now at end-of-life due to age and storm damage, hindering protection and revenue-generating activities. The new pier will be built with long-lasting marine-grade materials, reaching 120 feet into the Bay to allow for large and small boats to dock safely and minimize damage to the sea floor.
Revitalizing the pier will enable patrol boats to better manage the area, fishing vessels to dock, and boat tours to launch and showcase the area’s vibrancy to visitors.
All of these activities create long-term sustainability of the Bay, and generate revenue to support local fishers and tour guides, to continue to fund marine-protection programs.
