Piper our young Shire
Donation protected
Piper is doing really well with his recovery which is down to you guys for your generous donations helping keeping his medical care going forward - his wounds are slowly shrinking - one of his wounds which we are still bandaging everyday had a slight infection recently so he’s had a 2nd bout of antibiotics until yesterday - that wound was to the bone so it’s going to take longer to heal - his cap came off his tooth too we noticed on Saturday so our lovely vet Charlotte is coming to re do this tooth on Wednesday morning - we are still silver spraying his legs to protect the wounds whilst they heal from flies and mud - he will be having physio/chiro sessions starting around mid October once his wounds have had time to heal further - hoping his alignment is pretty good despite what he went through - he’s a big heavy horse and to be twisted in the cattle grid for 4hours was a worry for his size and weight pressing down on all his muscles.
we will keep you all posted about that - the wonderful Red Watch team from Tolvaddern Community fire service came to visit us and Piper on Saturday which was really really fantastic - Piper really made an impact on those super special chaps who were nothing short of amazing on the night we needed help most!
Please keep sharing Pipers story so we can keep going with his medical needs - without your support things could have been so much different today! We can’t thank you all enough! X
Hi the photo attached is our stunning 4yo Shire Horse Piper who was recently involved in a horrific accident on Wednesday 28th August 2024 - he got himself caught up in a cattle grid with 3 of his legs completely stuck in tight - one of his back legs was up to his femur - by the time the vet and firecrew arrived he’d sustained some quite serious injuries and was in a very distressed painful state - he was heavily sedated and constantly checked over by on call emergency vet Ailla from Kenwyn vets for four hours whilst the Red Watch firecrew from Tolvaddon Cornwall used cutting gear to get Piper freed -every minute we we unsure of the outcome for Piper - he hasn’t broken any legs thankfully but has on going medical needs to keep the injuries to his legs free from infection - he had some stitches in a couple of his legs as he’d cut through to the bone whilst thrashing around trying to get himself out of the grid - he also smashed one of his front adult teeth whilst stuck and chipped all his other teeth which we were going to have removed today after an XRay last Tuesday showed he’d damaged the pulp however on Friday 6th September he was seen having a seizure in his stable sustaining further injuries to his head and face Another emergency vet call out to try and find out what happened - we still don’t really know Bloods taken show his liver count and potassium levels are raised so another vet visit to re take bloods on Sunday 8th which results show levels still rising apart from a muscle trauma level which has lowered - more bloods taken Monday 9th September which are being sent up to an Equine hospital for more in depth tests - he’s on pain meds and antibiotics with frequent vet visits from our Amazing caring vets Charlotte Dani & Sam from Rosevean Vets - they think they can save his front tooth by capping it but he can’t have that procedure yet until we find out more about his sezure(s) we really need to keep his recovery going which is a financial worry for us - the bills so far add up to 3k and the thought of pulling the plug on him because we haven’t got the money is heartbreaking so we are asking from the bottom of our hearts if you would please kindly share this post and if you could donate any amount we would be forever in your debt Piper lives with our Shire mare Bess and they are the most gorgeous gentle giants Piper is only a youngster and we want to get him back to his usual cheeky handsome self so he can go on to live a long happy healthy life Thank you for your time and generosity
