Pitts Cemetery

New Hope Cemetery, formerly known as the Pitts Cemetery, is a historically Black cemetery behind the Pitts Plantation in Uniontown, Alabama. The buried ones in this cemetery are the formerly enslaved working on this plantation and former residents of Uniontown.
This cemetery resides next to FOUR MILLION TONS of coal ash owned by Arrowhead Environmental Partners. This coal ash contains some of the world's most deadly toxins (arsenic, mercury, uranium, etc.) at the highest levels that seeps in and desecrates the graves. The landfill operators constantly trespass onto the cemetery and have gone as far as bulldozing over the grave sites to remove any evidence of the buried bodies.
Our goal is to restore and preserve the cemetery to what it once was. My ancestors deserve a proper burial place where they can rest in peace. The residents of Uniontown deserve to be able to know the whereabouts of their loved ones and have a proper and restful place to pay their respects to their relatives.
Any contribution would be greatly appreciated and helpful towards this continuous fight against racial and environmental injustices!
