Mission:

The mission of the Greater Pittston Historical Society (GPHS) is to discover, collect, study, organize, preserve and display the history of the Greater Pittston area of Pennsylvania and to make that history available to the general public, public schools, researchers and historians. We support this mission by engaging in a variety of public educational programs; by organizing, maintaining and displaying artifact collections; by promoting the preservation of historic buildings and sites and by partnering with local and regional institutions to help us reach our goal of preserving the history of Greater Pittston.

Non-Profit Status:

GPHS has 501(c)(3) federal tax exempt Status. Persons or organizations that make contributions to a 501(c)(3) organization may be able to claim deductions from their federal tax.

Support:

GPHS is a member-driven organization with little means to generate income. We are calling for donations and volunteers. Please help us to preserve our history for future generations.

Why we need your help:

Here’s what we’ve been up to. The projects listed below require special equipment including high-powered scanners, custom-made oversized book scanners, laptops, cameras, memory cards, lighting systems and museum software. We also need programs for post-production and OCR to make our progress available to the public.

1.       We are in the process of collecting and preserving thousands of photographs, photo negatives, maps, artifacts, clothing, books, documents, official city records, and newspaper articles related to Greater Pittston.

2.       We are gathering Oral Histories from members of our community.

3.       We produce and circulate a quarterly publication, “The Greater Pittston Journal.

4.       We are actively involved with the preservation of the Revolutionary War-era Blanchard-Cooper Burial Ground in Port Blanchard, PA.

5.       We are pursuing two Pennsylvania Historic and Museum Commission markers for the city of Pittston.

6.       We aspire to establish a scholarship program for high-school seniors who reside in the Greater Pittston area.

Please consider making a donation.
