My mom, Karen Castillo, was diagnosed with colon cancer back in April of this year. She has had a big surgery where part of her colon was removed along with 13 lymph nodes where cancer had already spread. For this reason and the size of the tumor in her colon, her cancer is considered stage 3B.
After everything was removed from her body and recovered from surgery, doctors recommended an extensive treatment of chemotherapy to eliminate all possible cancer cells left in the body. Without a doubt, my mom put herself through this treatment, but after only three sessions, her body was not taking it well. The side effects of chemotherapy were extremely severe, to the point where she could not walk and was deteriorating the rest of her vital organs. After seeing how her body was taking chemotherapy, how she could not be a functional human being, and the doctors giving her a very low success rate, she decided to stop and look for other options.
This is how we found an alternative treatment that she started right away and kept for about four months. At first, we thought that the treatment was working well, but blood tests said the opposite after a couple of months. Her tests, which show tumor levels in her body, were increasing slowly until, just like millions of people, my mom was infected with Covid-19, which made her immune system weak, giving the cancer cells the possibility to take over and multiply exponentially. After the two weeks of quarantine, her cancer markers indicated an increase of more than twice what it was before, and it keeps growing every day that goes by.
My mom's current treatment is not strong enough to eliminate her advanced cancer, and it is also very expensive. She needs to switch to a stronger treatment that stops cancer cells from multiplying and attacks them directly using a combination of advanced techniques which would give my mom a better chance of survival. These techniques have been used by many other patients with the same diagnosis and it has been a higher success rate than any other treatments. Unfortunately, these treatments are very expensive, and my family cannot afford them.
We are a family of Colombian immigrants who have been in the United States for about five years. We came to this country full of hope looking to grow and contribute as family. We have overcome the challenges of adapting to a new country and hope to win this battle my mom is fighting with your support.
My mom is a loyal follower of Jesus Christ, full of His grace, which she transmits by being the joy of our house and of every place she goes to. She is always smiling and thinking about how to make others happy. She is the pillar of the family, and I can't imagine our life without her.
Prior to cancer, my mom worked as a Spanish teacher, but she was obligated to quit her job due to her weak immune system, leaving my dad being the only one working to provide for a family of four.
I go to college and work to help my dad with bills, but it is not enough to cover my mom's treatment. All of the family savings were spent in past treatments, and I don't really know what else I can do to help her. This is why I decided to create this fundraiser to ask for your support to help her defeat this horrible cancer before it spreads to other places and becomes incurable.

Mi mamá Karen Castillo fue diagnosticada con cáncer de colon en Abril de este año. Ella tuvo una cirugía muy grande donde parte de su colon fue removido y 13 nódulos donde el cancer se había esparcido. Por esta razón y por el tamaño del tumor en su colon el Cáncer es considerado etapa 3B. Después de que todo fue removido y se recuperó de la cirugía, el doctor recomendó un tratamiento de quimioterapia extenso para eliminar todas las posibles células cancerígenas en el cuerpo. Sin duda mi mamá se sometió a este tratamiento, pero después de solo 3 sesiones su cuerpo no lo estaba tomando bien. Los efectos secundarios de la quimioterapia eran extremadamente severos hasta el punto que ella no podía caminar y estaba deteriorando el resto de sus órganos vitales. Después de ver cómo su cuerpo estaba asimilando la quimioterapia, como ella no podía funcionar como un ser humano y los doctores no le dieron muchas esperanzas, ella decidió parar y buscar otras opciones.
Así fue cómo encontramos un tratamiento alternativo que ella empezó y mantuvo por 4 meses. Al principio pensamos que el tratamiento estaba funcionando bien, pero sus exámenes mostraron lo contrario después de un par de meses. Los exámenes que miden la presencia de cáncer en su cuerpo estaban aumentando lentamente hasta que, como millones de personas, mi mamá fue infectada con COVID-19, el cual hizo que su sistema inmune se debilitara, dando al cáncer la posibilidad de multiplicarse exponencialmente. Después de dos semanas de cuarentena, sus marcadores de cáncer indicaron un aumento de más del doble de lo que estaba y crece mas cada dia que pasa.
El tratamiento actual de mi mamá no es lo suficientemente fuerte para eliminar el avance del cáncer y eso también es muy costoso. Ella necesita cambiar a un tratamiento más fuerte que pare el crecimiento de las células cancerígenas y las ataque directamente usando una combinación de avanzadas técnicas lo cual le daría a mi mamá una mejor posibilidad de sobrevivir. Esas técnicas han sido usadas por muchos otros pacientes con el mismo diagnóstico y con una tasa alta de éxito en comparación de otros tratamientos. Desafortunadamente estos tratamientos son muy costosos y mi familia no puede pagarlos.
Mi mamá es una leal seguidora de Jesus, llena de su gracia, la cual ella trasmite siendo la alegría de la casa y de cada lugar donde ella va. Ella siempre está sonriendo y pensando cómo hacer feliz a otros. Ella es el pilar de la familia y no puedo imaginar nuestra vida sin ella. Antes del cáncer mi mamá trabajaba como profesora de Español, pero se vio obligada a renunciar por la fragilidad de su sistema inmune, dejando a mi papá como el único proveedor trabajando para una familia de cuatro.
Yo voy a la Universidad y trabajo para ayudar a mi papá con los pagos, pero no es suficiente para cubrir los tratamientos de mi mamá. Todos los ahorros de la familia se gastaron en los tratamientos ya realizados y yo no sé qué más puedo hacer para ayudarla. Por esta razón es que decidí crear este fondo y pedir su apoyo para ayudarla a pelear contra este horrible cáncer antes de que alcance otras partes del cuerpo y sea considerado incurable.
