Plastic pollution revolution.

Plastic! It’s EVERYWHERE, so why not USE it?


THE PROBLEM


Currently in Bocas del Toro, Panama, like many parts of the world, all rubbish, including plastic is either burnt, ends up littering the environment, or is buried as untreated landfill presenting another serious threat to the environment and its inhabitants through toxic leaching and the release of deadly gases and chemicals.

Plastic production is expected to double in the next 20 years, with plastic waste flowing into the oceans expected to triple! It’s hard to imagine a world where there’s more plastic in the ocean than fish (by weight), but scientists estimate that unless we change our habits, by 2050 this will be our reality.

Toward the end of the 20th century, the plastics industry promoted recycling in an attempt to alleviate the environmental concerns presented by plastics' devastatingly slow decomposition rate.

Sadly, they made no efforts to actually create systems to recycle, using the excuse that collecting, cleaning, and sorting post-consumer plastics was too complicated and not economically viable. We disagree.


THE SOLUTION


By placing a small deposit system on single-use bottles (approved by the municipality) we’re able to fund the collection, cleaning & sorting of plastic waste aiding us to build a self-sustaining plastic recycling plant, right here on the island!

We will then transform the waste into an object of value such as construction materials like recycled plastic lumber (RPL), thus ensuring the long term viability of the project and simultaneously stimulating the local economy, and funding education into sensible plastic usage. 

Furthermore, by providing a pest and water-resistant alternative to traditional lumber we can also help prevent logging of ecologically important trees in the area such as Nispero or Almendro due to their favorable durability against pests and water damage.


THE BIGGER PICTURE


While this will initially benefit the environment, economy, and health of the Bocas Del Toro island region, our mission is to influence and improve waste management globally, particularly in places where plastic recycling is often not economically feasible. 

Our hope is to make this model an example to follow for other small villages, towns, islands, and communities around the world. We pledge to make everything completely open-source and transparent to ensure that it will propagate swiftly & easily worldwide. 

Whilst we have essential support of the Bocas community and an important partnership with the local environmental organization , we want to be independent. No, we HAVE to be. Independent from political, religious, financial agendas. That's where you come into the picture.

¡El plástico! Está EN TODAS PARTES, ¿por qué no USARLO?



EL PROBLEMA

Actualmente en Bocas del Toro, Panamá, como en muchas otras partes del mundo, toda la basura, incluido el plástico, se quema, termina ensuciando el medio ambiente o se entierra en un vertedero sin tratamiento, lo que representa otra seria amenaza para el medio ambiente y sus habitantes a través de filtración de líquidos tóxicos y la liberación de gases y productos químicos mortales.

Se estima que la producción de plástico se duplique en los próximos 20 años, y que los desechos plásticos que fluyen hacia los océanos se tripliquen. Es difícil imaginar un mundo en el que haya más plástico en el océano que peces (por peso), pero los científicos estiman que, a menos que cambiemos nuestros hábitos, para el 2050 esta será nuestra realidad.


Hacia fines del siglo XX, la industria del plástico promovió el reciclaje como un “intento” de aliviar las preocupaciones ambientales presentadas por la tasa de descomposición extremadamente lenta de los plásticos.


Lamentablemente, no hicieron ningún esfuerzo por crear sistemas para reciclar, con la excusa de que recolectar, limpiar y clasificar los plásticos post consumo era demasiado complicado y no económicamente viable. No estamos de acuerdo.


LA SOLUCIÓN


Al aplicar un sistema de un deposito a las botellas de un solo uso (ya aprobado por el municipio), podemos financiar la recolección, limpieza y clasificación de los desechos plásticos, lo que nos permite construir una planta de reciclaje de plástico autosuficiente, ¡aquí EN LA ISLA !.


Luego, transformaremos los desechos en objetos con valor, como materiales de construcción, por ejemplo madera plástica reciclada (RPL), asegurando así la viabilidad a largo plazo del proyecto y simultáneamente estimulando la economía local y financiando la educación en el uso responsable del plástico.


Además, al proveer una alternativa a las tablas de madera, resistente a bacterias y humedad, también podemos ayudar en la prevención de la explotación forestal, en específico de árboles ecológicamente importantes por su resistencia contra el daño causado por bacterias y humedad como Níspero o Almendro.


LA VISIÓN MÁS AMPLIA

Mientras esto inicialmente beneficiará el ambiente, la economía y la salud del archipiélago Bocas del Toro, nuestra misión es educar y concientizar a los habitantes en el manejo de los residuos globalmente, especialmente en lugares donde el reciclaje de plástico no es factible.

Nuestra esperanza es hacer de este proyecto un modelo a seguir para otros aldeas pequeñas, pueblos, islas y comunidades alrededor del mundo. Nos comprometemos hacer todo totalmente abierto y transparente para asegurar su propagación velozmente en la provincia, en el país y proyectarnos a escala mundial.


Si bien tenemos el apoyo esencial de la comunidad de Bocas y una asociación importante con la organización ambiental local, queremos ser independientes de las agendas políticas, religiosas y financieras. Ahí es donde entras en escena.
