Hello everyone!
We are piano students from Amsterdam and with our initiative 'Solidarity through music - play to help' we are fundraising to help a music school on Easter Island which is in a severe financial hardship due to Covid-19. The school is the Toki Rapa Nui school of music and arts. Please, visit our youtube piano performances which you will find at the bottom of this page and support us with your donation! We hope you enjoy our music!
The island
Easter island (Rapa Nui) is the most isolated inhabited spot on Earth. 80% of its income relies on tourism. Because of the global pandemic, all this income has vanished. Most of the funding which previously had been intended for the school is now directed towards supporting the collapsing economy of the island. As a result the future of the Toki Rapa Nui school and its children is hanging on a dangerous uncertainty.
The Toki organisation
Toki Rapa Nui is an organisation which was founded to revive, protect and promote the cultural legacy of the island. It is located inland Easter Island on a high hill about 5 km away from the main village dirt road. Toki began with the first Music and Arts School on the island and eventually grew into a comprehensive project building upon three main pillars: Music and Arts school, Cultural Protection and Sustainability.
Music and Arts school
Currently Toki gives a chance to around 100 children to have access to classical music education and the Rapanui traditional arts and music. This is made possible by subsidised tuitions. A mini van transports the children and the teachers daily between the village and the school.
Cultural Protection
The Rapanui language is nearly close to extinction and today only 1 of 5 people still speak the language. Toki's work is focused on preserving and keeping the language alive passing it on to the future generations, so the cultural heritage and richness of the island will not become extinct.
Toki also has developed its own agricultural project which relies on using ancestral techniques for the cultivation of food which are in balance with nature.
Sustainability and environmental protection
Toki's aim is to be 100% self-sustainable. With the help of more than 70 volunteers the School of Music and the Arts was build using the principles of Biotecture Earthships using natural and recycled materials. This is the first construction of its type South America.
Our goal
At the moment the Toki organisation is working on finding funds for teachers’ salaries, basic materials, maintenance of the school, administrative costs. The aim of our campaign will be to raise money for the transportation of the children and the teachers on the mini van between the village and the school. Without funding for this transportation, the school year cannot start normally. Ideally, we hope to cover the costs for the entire school year which is 9 months.
The cost for the mini van:
400,000 Chilean peso per month = 436.61 euro per month
for 9 months - 3929,49 euro
1.9 % charges from the profit - 74 euro
Total amount to be raised - 4000 euro.
We will be teaming up with Stichting Students for Children.
Students for Children supports education projects around the world. "We strive to enable and improve education for children in developing countries through organising fundraising activities with partner schools in the Netherlands. Our main goals comprise the following:
