Playground at the Matamoros Refugee Camp

In partnership with the Resource Center of Matamoros and Team Brownsville, we are raising money to buy and build a playground for the hundreds of asylum-seeking children still living at the Matamoros refugee camp. Most of these kids have only known hardship and struggle. They've been living in tents in this refugee camp for over a year, with no access to real toys or playground equipment.
We hope that everyone can think back to their local childhood playground and remember fondly the invigorating games of tag and make-believe that were only possible because of the exciting (and safe) playground that allowed you to be a kid. We want to provide them that same experience.
The team has reached out to a few playground manufacturers, and although they can get pretty expensive, we think we can get a nice one for ~$9,000. We also will need to prepare the foundation with a soft sand surface and curbing around the area, for an additional ~$1000.
The goal is to raise the full $10,000 by the end of November, so we can order the equipment and start construction ASAP!
Any donation will help! If you can spare $5 or $500, each dollar will make such a difference! It's heartbreaking to see these kids play with broken toys, hanging out in boring tents all day. A playground would change their lives!
The American Academy of Pediatrics says that "children’s developmental trajectory is critically mediated by appropriate, affective relationships with loving and consistent caregivers as they relate to children through play." And UNICEF supports a child's right to play because "play is not only a child’s inalienable right – it also influences physical, socio-emotional and cognitive development. The right to play is protected in Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, as well as the right to sport, which is specifically contained in other international treaties".
With your donations we can provide these refugee children a safe place to socialize, develop, and enjoy their childhood.
