Help Chris Blackstone Keep a Roof Over His Head
Donation protected
We're raising money for our dear friend, Chris Blackstone, who was born blind. Living in San Jose on a limited income, he is on the verge of being homeless.
Chris has been living at his current residence for years with his grandfather and uncle. Recently, Chris's grandfather passed away and his uncle has moved out with only a month's notice. Chris cannot afford the current rent by himself. With no family to turn to, Chris is on his own with a limited income and a rent payment he will be unable to afford come February 1st.
Waiting on a Waitlist
Chris has applied for several housing programs in San Jose and out of state. While he's waiting to hear back from these programs, Chris needs help paying his monthly rent alone.
How You Can Help
Our goal with this GoFundMe is to raise enough to keep a roof over Chris's head until his name is called for public housing or he can move. Chris's total rent is $1,600, so the money raised will be used to cover the $800 Chris cannot afford on his own. Chris receives a disability income of $1,000 a month. That leaves him only $200 dollars a month for groceries and public transportation.
Optimistic Despite a Life of Challenges
Born blind, Chris learned early on how to take care of himself and is very independent. He is still incredibly grateful for the help and love he received from his grandparents and friends. Chris does not like asking for help. Chris has had many hurdles and setbacks in his life, but you'd never guess from his positive, glowing personality and smile. One of the kindest people we have been lucky to meet, Chris never complains about his lot in life and is always positive and considerate of others. In fact, it wasn't until my dad called Chris to wish him happy holidays that he found out about Chris's housing crisis. Chris's desire to never burden others made it difficult for him to ask for help.
Words From Chris:
My name is Chris Blackstone, and I am a 43-year-old man who was born blind. I was raised by my grandparents and my uncle when my mother was unable to raise me herself. Recently my grandfather passed away and it has been up to my uncle and I to keep up the place I am currently living in. Unexpectedly, my uncle has decided to move in with his friend, leaving me without any way to pay the full rent on my own.
Now I am in danger of not having a place to go after the beginning of February. I have put in applications for multiple housing programs. However, they are telling me that it is going to be a minimum of 6 months to find any sort of an opening in the public housing waiting list.
I have tried to find rooms for rent only to discover that landlords want to rent to people who have full-time employment and not disability income. A stable living situation would give me peace of mind. I am very worried about being displaced and homeless.
Thank you for taking the time to read,
Chris
