Try to imagine…..

Your doctor tells you that you have serious, life-threatening issues.
Your kidneys are failing, and your heart can’t keep up.
You need a heart and kidney transplant to live.
And you’re only 31 years old.

Would you give up on life? How would you feel? What would you do?

These are questions we can’t possibly answer because no one but the person going through this can really know what it feels like.

But this is what Reyna Sustaita is going through. It’s what her life has become and what life has dealt her. She has no choice.

Who is Reyna?

Reyna is only 31 years old and fighting for her life. She is a very dedicated housekeeper at Chesterfield Heights, an independent senior retirement community in Midlothian, Virginia. She has been dedicated to her position for over 4 years and desperately needs the job to help pay for the monumental costs of her treatments so far, and the enormous amount needed to keep her alive in the near future.

Reyna lives with her parents now. She had to move in with them because of her medical situation and needs their help. She has 3 brothers and one sister. She used to enjoy traveling, going to lakes, visiting parks and watching the seasons change. All this has changed now.

Reyna has end stage renal disease and is on the waiting list for a kidney and heart transplant. She started dialysis in February of 2023 and switched to home dialysis in March. She has chosen to do dialysis at home overnight to be able to continue to do her job. It takes 8 hours every night and she cannot skip a single night. She has been forced to give up her second job in order to do her dialysis every night.

Her life has changed in so many ways. There are no extra activities anymore. Simply going out to eat is not possible because her diet has changed, and she must be home in time to do her 8 hours of dialysis every night.

In July of 2023 she was informed that she had heart failure. Reyna would not be able to withstand the kidney transplant with such a weak heart. Therefore, when she has the operation, the doctors will replace both her heart and kidney at the same time.

Medication is extremely expensive, and Reyna has built up a debt she will never be able to repay. Not only that, but the average cost of a kidney transplant runs around $140,000, and the cost of a heart transplant is between $1,300,000 and $1,600,000.

Reyna gets tired easily and can’t enjoy most of the foods she used to eat. But amazingly enough, you wouldn’t know anything is wrong by her attitude, work ethic and dedication. She deeply cares about the people she serves and works with at Chesterfield Heights, and has one of the best laughs you’ve ever heard. Her smile is contagious and her passion to continue to do what she needs to do should set an example for all of us.

Even in the face of death she continues to live her life with a positive attitude and make the best of her situation.

Reyna needs everyone’s help. We firmly believe that with the power of compassion, grace, and kindness, we can help alleviate some of the financial burden that comes with such a journey.

We can all make a difference:
We are making a heartfelt plea to everyone. Our goal is to raise funds that will help cover Reyna's medical expenses, both now and in the near future when she needs her transplants and help her live.

Update:
On Friday November 3, 2023, Reyna had a heart attack. She had a pacemaker installed 3 days later to make sure her heart didn't miss another beat. She couldn't return to work for two more weeks. But she is determined to do so and everyone is pulling for her and can't wait to see her back. Please help if you can....
