Alicia's Fight against Cancer

UPDATE: It has been well over a year, and the most trying time in Alicia and Derrik’s life. Despite the grueling journey that breast cancer has forced upon her, Alicia has shown incredible strength, resilience, and perseverance. She has undergone numerous rounds of chemotherapy and radiation, braved surgeries and invasive tests, and endless medical appointments, all while trying to maintain a sense of normalcy for their daughter, Aubrey.

As we settle in to 2024, let us come together as a community to offer our support to Alicia and Derrik. Your support can make a tangible difference in their lives; they continue to shoulder this immense burden, both emotionally and financially, and now we have the opportunity to lift them up when they need it most.

I'm not sure why the least deserving people have to endure such fights, but it's where this story begins.

Alicia has been diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma, Stage 2, a type of breast cancer.

 

Alicia is the brightest light in every room she enters; her happiness and laughter are contagious. Her ability to see beauty in the world and appreciate the smallest joys is something each of us should adopt. We all see this as she shares bits of her life, including the beautiful flowers she tends to; the quirky habits of her pets; the fun dinners she enjoys with her husband, Derrik; the silly moments working in a building full of middle-school-aged children; and last but not least, in her beautiful daughter Aubrey.

Watching Alicia and Derrik become parents and celebrate Aubrey daily is the greatest pleasure to observe. Sadly, Alicia's mother is no longer with us to witness the beautiful life I described above. Still, I know with confidence that the family Alicia and Derrik have created with their pets and beloved daughter Aubrey is one of pure love and joy. It is a dedication to dear family members that are no longer here to witness it.

As devastating as it is to celebrate your daughter's first birthday shortly before being diagnosed with breast cancer, I know that Alicia has the strength and motivation to fight for her life.

 

Representing an entire community of family and friends who dearly love Alicia, we only want to support her and her family through these difficult times. As this journey begins, we are unclear about their family's specific financial needs, but we know that many hurdles exist in their future. No amount is too small, as they begin to face unpredictable expenses related to medical costs, medical travel, food, gas, and the inevitable impact on their work capacity.
