Corey Jacob Sargent was tragically taken from us Saturday, June 11th, 2022, in Newport News, VA by a careless driver in a horrible rear end collision. 

Born August 19th, 1996 in Virginia Beach, VA to Tracy Sargent and Gerard Carelli, Corey was an honor graduate of Kempsville High School and Old Dominion University earning a Bachelor’s and Master’s in Physics. He was poised to be the first in ODU history to receive a PhD in Astrophysics. In addition to his education, he was an Eagle Scout from Troop 408 in Virginia Beach, VA.

Corey enjoyed hiking off-trail in state parks, kayaking, collecting firearms, building space themed Lego sets and looked forward to eventually going to space. Everything was a competition: baseball, kayaking, hiking, even school where he won nearly every award possible from the ODU Physics Department.

Corey leaves behind many people who love and adore him. One thing they all want is to ensure his death has meaning that extends well beyond his short 25 years. This fundraising will help his parents cover his funeral expenses and to create an academic scholarship in Corey's name at ODU so that another young scientist with aspirations as grand as his, can have the same opportunities. The ODU scholarship will aid in ensuring that the historical moment that Corey was set to achieve - the first in ODU history to receive a PhD in Astrophysics - is accomplished.
