My name is Amy Walsh and I am a teacher in Baltimore City Public Schools. I am starting this GoFundMe on behalf of my parents, Dot (Paglia) and Tom Walsh. Fifteen years ago, my mom was diagnosed with polycystic kidney disease which sent her into renal failure. She has been receiving dialysis 3 times a week ever since. My mom had to leave her job as a nurse's aid, which left our family with its fair share of challenges. However, nothing could have prepared us for what would happen in July 2022.
Last July, Dot began to have a whirlwind of complications regarding her health. It started with foot pain that rapidly evolved into something far more serious. She was admitted to Stony Brook Hospital where she was treated for the next 7 months. After a 7-month hospital stay, a blood clot disease, multiple surgeries, 2 leg amputations, heart procedures, and a brain aneurysm, my family and I did not know if she would make it. My mom is the strongest woman on the planet. She was finally cleared to come home after intense physical rehab and therapy. She has another heart procedure coming up to replace her aortic valve and sees a cardiologist and a neurologist regularly. Hopefully in the next few months, she will be getting prosthetics as well.
My father had to retire early after 36 years with Brentwood School District to be my mom's full-time caretaker. They could use this GoFundMe money to fix things in the house such as a wheelchair-accessible bathroom/shower and to repair a leaky roof. They could also use this to get themselves a wheelchair-accessible van.
Please give to this GoFundMe and share. No amount is too little. Anything helps. Here is a little bit about Dot so you can have a background.
Dot was born and raised on Rollstone Avenue in West Sayville, New York. She is 57 years old. My parents have been living in Oakdale for 30 years. Dot's father was a lifelong member of the West Sayville Fire Department (Chief and Commissioner) as well as a founding member of the Sayville Ambulance. Dot's maternal uncle is Arthur E. Premm Jr, the former postmaster of Oakdale and a member of the school board. The school on Montauk Highway in Oakdale was named after him. He passed away from complications of Polycystic Kidney Disease as did her mother, grandmother and cousin. Thank you for taking the time to read and let's show some love to my parents who could use it.
