A young girl’s promising future is slowly fading away before her eyes

Odetta is a clearly brilliant young girl with a promising future. However, Odetta’s promising future is slowly being taken away from her hands by lack of financial support for further education.

Odetta scored 9 points on her Malawi School Certificate of Education examination in 2017. (IGCSE equivalent *** 3 A* s and 6 A’s *** see attached photos). In 2018, she was selected to Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (formerly University of Malawi, College of Medicine) to study Medicine to become a medical doctor. Sadly, when her father, who was her only source of support, suffered a stroke 1 year later, Odetta struggled and was later withdrawn from college on academic grounds. Her financial struggles after her father's illness severely impacted her academic performance, as she lacked basic resources to sustain herself in school, including equipment to access educational materials.

Still believing in the power of education, Odetta recently applied into a 3 year diploma programme at the Malawi Rehabilitation College, and was successful. However, she was unable to start her studies on 17th July 2023 due to lack of financial support towards tuition fees (K450,000 or $450 per term) and living expenses. We have however raised funds towards part payment of her schools and she has now registered for her diploma. (We are currently exploring whether KUHES would consider re-instating her into the medical programme, acknowledging it may be against university policy)

We have established this fund to help Odetta pursue tertiary education in the hope of a brighter future for herself, her family and community. The initial fundraiser amount is a rough estimate to cover tuition fees for Odetta's 3-year diploma programme, educational materials, and living expenses.
