About a year and a half ago I noticed a lump in my armpit, I regretfully passed it off as nothing and carried on with life normally. Then one day the photo I shared of it on Facebook came back up in my memories, I thought to myself oh, I should probably get that checked out now. Unfortunately after they took a little piece of it out(biopsied it) they discovered that the lump was a tumor and it was indeed cancerous. If you could imagine hearing this news was difficult to take and even to this day I still find it hard to believe that I have cancer. The results were then looked into deeper, was supposed to take 3 weeks to get the results back, it ended up taking a month and half. They were looking for lymphatic cancer as the tumor was in my right arm lymph node but no, it turns out it was skin cancer that had metastisized into my lymphatic system already. Once in my lymphatic system the cancer has easy access to the rest of my body and it's vital organs. The easiest options for it to migrate to were my right lung and kidneys. Ok so I really was not expecting them to say that I had stage 4 skin cancer, hearing the doctor say that the cancer was not curable but is treatable crushed me. Upon further research I discovered stage 4 cancer patients often have about a 5 year life expectancy. Knowing that I may not live to see my 46th Birthday has very much made me appreciate everyday for what it is, a blessing. I am grateful for being on this planet and will attempt to make the best of what I am given.
Treatment: I started immunotherapy about 4 months ago
Immunotherapy requires me to get infusions via I.V. of two different drugs that I cannot pronounce
Ipilimumab (ip" lim' ue mab)
Nivolumab (nye vol' ue mab)
Each infusion lasts a half hour for a total of 1hr each time. I am currently on my 4th round starting 12 weeks ago. I have a treatment every three weeks.
The first blood infusion left me with a large itchy rash on my chest, it got worse and moved onto my back and the rest of my body. Dr. Vance prescribed me a steroid cream Betaderm Ointment that helped so very much. The treatment also left me feeling pretty tired, I started sleeping a bunch more than normal, taking naps during the day, also seemed to suffer from random bouts of sneezing and a runny nose. I assume this was my immune system saying what the heck is going on here.
The second treatment left me with small sores popping up over my body that were also itchy, the ointment seemed to help but they were coming up in so many different spots so often that it was quite difficult to keep up with them. Also suffering from mouth sores, this is also something that is a regular symptom of said treatment, rinsing my mouth 4 times a day with baking soda mouthwash seems to help so very much, really does make it feel much better. It also left me sleeping a whole bunch more and feeling very lethargic, thankfully still have the energy to cook and clean, though getting slightly behind with the cleaning.
Round 3: ok...so this one hit me like a bit of a brick, after the infusion I slept for 5 hours, woke up with a terrible headache, even then felt really tired, cooked dinner and eventually laid down for the night but laid there for 6 hours trying to sleep, couldn't manage it, finally got there but I woke up really really sore, all my joints were really achy and my body felt swollen, I then also had a bad headache for two days, was still struggling to sleep and felt a little beyond tired. Thankfully it has slowly improved and have managed to catch up with most of my chores, sometimes the house up keep can be a little much as I suffer from hoarding, I've managed to get a long way with it and no longer hoard or neglect getting rid of garbage, now I just suffer with having too many things and not enough homes for it all. Recently managed to rid myself of 7 heavy duty garbage bags full of stuff I no longer need, it is feeling great to have space back.
I have a feeling that this 4th treatment is going to take me down quite a few notches and I'm honestly quite nervous. During this treatment I have also felt pain near my kidneys, in my right lung and now in my right armpit, really hoping that this pain indicates the cancer dying as it is where I was told the cancer is.
So I went out and got myself a memory foam mattress topper. After round 4 of treatment attempting to sleep has been a nightmare...at one point I just wanted someone to come by and shoot me...anyone know a gun for hire? When the pain of infusion makes it into your dreams...you know it is next level.
With my current queen mattress and being so sore and achy...I could only lay in one position for about 2 minutes before having to adjust myself from the full body pain, not quite long enough to drift off to sleep. Attempting to walk... literally felt like I was 80 years old, no offence to 80 year olds but I do now know a little of their struggles and I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Now with this memory foam mattress topper, I can now lay in one position for about 10 minutes before having to adjust. Just about long enough to get to sleep, Thank goodness.
Would really like to thank everyone who shared or donated to my GoFundMe campaign, without you I wouldn't have been able to make my sleep much more achievable and peaceful, if you could imagine a foam with memory unfortunately/regrettably is not cheap.
And if you haven't been able to donate, no worries, please just send me positive thoughts as I need them more than ever.
The time where I find out if this blood infusion stuff is actually working comes up in less than 2 weeks, if I said I was nervous for the results... it very much would be an understatement.
Thank you and bless up.
If you have managed to read this far then thank you. Also thankful for all the support my friends have given me, did not expect to receive so much help and be shown so much amazing love. Have managed to keep my spirits up and really hope I have the strength to continue this way.
Thanks again.
Being unable to currently work I would really appreciate some financial help, even a little will help so much. By no means do I expect for you donate a lot but a little will really go a long way and I would so appreciate it.
Thank you for all the love, beyond thankful for my amazing friends and family.
