Please Help April's corgi Bella Get Therapy for DM

Donation protected
Hi, If you’re here, I’m guessing you know Bella and I through Instagram, my blog, and various sites and have followed our adventures and seen our cosplay photoshoots over nearly the past decade.  Maybe you don’t know us, and you just love animals or have a Corgi fetish (I totally understand), or perhaps you just hate Degenerative Myelopathy as much as I. Bella has now entered Stage 2 of Degenerative Myelopathy. It’s a crippling neurological disease that’s similar to ALS. It travels up the spine, first rendering her back legs useless and putting her in a wheelchair, then her front legs will be affected and she’ll be in a wagon, and then it will affect her ability to swallow and breathe and she’ll have to be euthanized. It’s incurable and relatively untreatable. Bella just turned 10 - a young age for a Corgi as their average lifespan is 16 years.  Dogs are given 6 months to 3 years to live once they’re diagnosed with DM.  Here is the longer version of Degenerative Myelopathy: https://www.certapet.com/degenerative-myelopathy/  This is a heartbreaking disease. If Bella is tired, she'll still drag herself around like a baby seal to be near me. If she's walking, she scrapes her feet so much that they end up raw and bloody from the asphalt. Corgi Aid rented us a wheelchair and advised us to get her used to it.  She's now at that point. But she throws herself down in a tantrum while in her Corgi cart and refuses to move because she’s doesn’t like it and is fully aware something isn’t right with her.  I have to bribe her to walk around the house in the wheelchair by tossing popcorn onto the floor. She’s exhausted by the end of the day to the point where I have to carry her outside to wee. She seems depressed, but then there are periods of time when all she wants to do is play. While there’s no truly happy ending with DM, there is a way to slow it down – intense physical therapy. The more muscle I can keep on Bella, the longer it will take for the disease to reach its final stages.    She’s on a lot of supplements (CBD oil, turmeric, fish oil, glucosamine, MSM for starters, and I’m open other suggestions) and 2 anti-inflammatory medications for pain. She’s also had acupuncture treatments and 9 rounds of laser therapy and underwater treadmill sessions.  The underwater treadmill forces her to use her hind legs and is grueling, but it helps keep her legs from atrophying.  Additionally, I swim with her at home and massage her legs in-between physical therapy sessions. I've replaced all her beds with spine supporting bedding and laid down carpet runners everywhere to keep her from slipping. I don’t like the idea of asking for help. However, I’m at the financial point where I can’t keep going unless I do. To slow the disease’s progression, and keep Bella moving and comfortable, she needs therapy - and therapy costs money.  I’m a recent college graduate who doesn’t yet have a full-time job and the freelance worlds of writing, modeling, and odd jobs are hit-or-miss.  If you’ve known or been following me for any length of time, then you know that Bella is a massive part of my life.  Any help you can give her will also help me. I work from home and she’s always where I am, following me from room to room and graciously allowing me a little space on my bed at night. She’s on every photoshoot I do, even if you don’t see her.  She’s the center of my colorful little world. She has been my best friend for nearly a decade, and I owe it to her to do the best I can for her until it’s time for her to move on to the next world. I hope you are willing to help me with that.  With your help, we can keep her healthy, comfortable and moving in the time we have left together.  I’ll provide all receipts for her treatments and supplements in my updates so everyone knows where and how money is being spent. The help is for Bella, not me. (Bella takes corgi cosplay quite seriously.) A word to the wise: If you’re thinking of getting one of these awesome and incredibly quirky dogs, please insist on it being DM free. This is a wretched, horrible disease that no dog or owner should have to suffer.  If you’re a breeder, please be a good one and don’t sell puppies with DM genetics. I certainly won’t be returning to Bella’s breeder, nor will I recommend them. Integrity and word of mouth matters.   We can learn a lot from dogs – affection, compassion, love, the importance of naps, etc., but they also teach us to sit.  They teach us presence because they, like all animals, are masters of presence.  Bella is here now and each moment is a gift for both of us.  She continually teaches me to sit. Your help will benefit us in each moment to come. We could really use your help. Even if you’re unable to donate, sharing this will be helpful as well. As I mentioned earlier, word of mouth matters. Thank you. Very, very much.  April & Bella
