Please Help Cheviot Rec Center Referees
Donation protected
During times like these, I think it is important for all of us to think about the people in our community that have been disproportionately impacted by the COVID virus. Given the sprawling nature of Los Angeles, there are not many tight knit communities, but I truly believe that the Cheviot Hills Rec Center has provided that needed venue to bring people in our community together. The Rec Center has become a second home to me and my family for the last six years and I know a lot of us have spent a considerable amount of time watching our kids play sports there.
But it has become more that that; it has become a place where you look forward to seeing friends, meeting new people from many different geographic areas, a place where we can safely drop-off our kids to play and a much needed outlet from the craziness of everyday life. Personally, some of our families’ best friends we have met at the Rec Center and we continue to meet new great families.
All of this would not be possible without the Cheviot Hills staff and the referees that we all have gotten to know very well. We probably all know the referees by name and they have certainly grown to be part of the Cheviot Hills community. They are more than people wearing a black/white outfit with a whistle; they act as teachers on the courts, teaching our kids valuable lessons ( I can’t tell you how many times I have witnessed an official speak to one of our kids during a timeout to explain something to them), they have reminded us many times how we (parents) should act during games, have really instilled great sportsmanship in our kids and have become friends to us all. We have been very lucky to have these same officials with us for many years as we (and our kids) have grown attached to them.
Unfortunately, the shutdown of all sporting events has resulted in a significant financial loss for many of them, as their primary source of income has gone to almost zero. As a result, I have set up this GoFundMe account to provide some financial assistance to the Cheviot Hills Rec referees to hopefully bridge them to the point at which sporting events resume play. I know many of us have been impacted personally and financially by the shutdown, but if you have some discretionary money that you have saved, please consider donating to the GoFundMe page. Every little bit helps, even if you can only afford to contribute $5. The money donated will be evenly disbursed to the Cheviot Hills referees that many of you know well.
