Please Help Elizabeth Move to Affordable Housing

Hi, my name is Janet & I'm raising funds for our friend, Elizabeth.

Elizabeth is a disability activist and all round beautiful person. Her handle on Twitter is @blindkindness and she has moved and impressed many of us with the positive energy she radiates and her upbeat activism for people with disabilities (PWD). Elizabeth, who lost her vision suddenly as an adult, lives in the Canadian province of Ontario. As a person with a disability she has little choice but to survive on ODSP (Ontario Disability Support Program) which like most disability programs in Canada is woefully underfunded. People with disabilities live well below the poverty level on $1,169 per month. As rent is high in most Ontario cities, most of this allowance goes to rent, leaving folks with less than $200 per month for food, transportation, medication and other necessities. Affordable housing is minimal in Ontario, so most PWD are forced to find an apartment at market rent. To compound the stress of living in poverty, Elizabeth is currently going through cancer treatments . Making these times even harder, Elizabeth has no living family members to support her through this difficult time.

But there is a ray of sunshine and hope on the horizon for Elizabeth. She has been fortunate to be accepted in an affordable housing program in Saskatchewan, 2,600 km away. There she has supportive friends to welcome her, has found a doctor and will be able to live more comfortably.

Unfortunately, as you can imagine, when you live below the poverty line nothing is left for moving expenses. If we could each donate a small (or larger) amount of money to support Elizabeth in her move, she won't have to leave behind all her possessions in Ontario and start afresh in Saskatchewan. We would all find it heartbreaking to abandon our special family treasures and leave behind some of our personal history. And also, finding & buying all practical items again in her new town will be a challenge for a person who has been depleted by the cancer treatments she has been undergoing over the past year. Many of us know first hand the exhaustion and illness that goes along with cancer treatments.

If you have the means to help, please donate whatever you can towards Elizabeth's move. You will be supporting a beautiful person who freely puts forth her energy to support others. Elizabeth must move within the month so she doesn't lose this opportunity for affordable housing. Please help a very deserving and lovely woman to live an easier and more rewarding life in Saskatchewan. Your help will make a world of difference.
