Hi my name is Allan Meaney, I am a plumber and gasfitter in Fort McMurray, Alberta.
I help people stay warm in the winter and make sure they have hot and cold flowing water all year round. I have a dog hs name is Floyd. He is an American Bully and is 9 years old. Floyd is my whole world, we are inseparable. He goes everywhere with me and if he cant go, well I dont go. Floyd loves life and loves everybody he sees.
On January 1st 2024 I noticed a twitch in his hind legs. I also had to fill his water bucket up twice in a day which was really strange for him. He was using the washroom alot more than usual because of this increased thirst. Over a video call with the vet they thought it to be a urine infection and when I brought him to the vet thats what they said so they put him on antibiotics and sent him home. He got worse, his twitching in his legs had gotten so bad that his whole body was now twitching and about 5 days later I had to rush to Edmonton from Fort McMurray and thats when I got the gut wrenching news that Floyd actually had lymphoma.
My heart broke in two hearing that my boy had cancer. This fella has been by my side through the worst times of my life. The unconditional love I receive from him is all I have in this world. He has so much more life in him and i just cant give up on him yet.
He has gone through his first round of chemotherapy and has to stay on it for 24 weeks. His first round was an intravenous injection of vincristine and the second week is an oral cyclophosphamide. It’s alternating between oral and iv every week and the iv means a trip to Edmonton. That’s 12 trips in 24 weeks.
Floyds twitching was so bad by the time I brought him to the vet in Edmonton that he was having trouble keeping balance while standing up. His legs would slide out from under him on hardwood floor. He went from strong confident dog to weak puppy in the matter of a week. His calcium was up about 50% higher than it should have been. After the chemo and some fluids the calcium levels went down and shaking stopped pretty much altogether. The vet is super pleased with the results of the first round of chemo and I have hopes that he is going to do well.
I just cant loose him yet because honestly he is all I have.
I have no insurance which was probably the worst mistake I ever made when it comes to him. His vet bill just for the 2 days he was in the hospital was $5530 and then the hotel stay and gas and food was needed because Edmonton is 450 km away for Fort McMurray. The 12 trips I need to take will all need hotel stays and gas and food. Before he takes his oral meds he needs blood work and again before he goes to Edmonton to get the iv. Blood work is going to cost money as well as each weeks medication and vet visit. The vet said that the whole round of chemo is going to be around 10-15 thousand dollars over the course of 24 weeks. I take a vets estimate to be a solid as bowl of jello, so that number will fluctuate I’m sure. He is going to get the care he needs even if I starve myself. My boy is that important to me.
I don’t know what I am going to do if I loose him. I know he has a few more years left in him for sure. He was such a strong playful dog a week before the diagnosis. I am just asking to help me give my boy a few extra years. Floyd and I thank you for the bottom of our hearts.
