Like most medical emergencies, I had no idea what I was in for when I got home 3/20/21. I took my dog, Harlee, outside immediately after getting home from work like I normally do, but she seemed... off? And then, as we were going up a small hill, her back legs gave out completely. I scooped her up and brought her back inside, putting her down next to her food and water while I looked up nearby animal hospitals. She wasn't eating, she could barely walk, and as I drove to the hospital, it hit me that she was dying in my arms.
After spending 10 hours in 3 different animal hospital parking lots and running on less than 4 hours of sleep, I finally found out what happened to her. She had sick sinus syndrome. Her heart was barely beating, but thankfully the vets were able to get her condition stable.
After seeing her, barely breathing in my arms, I didn't think twice about it. She had to get a pacemaker. The vet walked me through how the surgery would go and kept me updated on her condition while I waited for her to recover. And god, I was so happy to see her back to her normal, grumpy self again. She was alive again, and I couldn't be happier.
And then I got the bill. Before the surgery, the vet gave me a rough estimate, and while I knew I couldn't afford it, I didn't have another choice. I would not let my best friend die. I put it all on my credit card and dumped what little I had in my savings account, but I still owe so much. And that's not including the bill for when she gets her follow-up checkups later this week and again next month.
Please, it would mean so much to me to be able to pay off her pacemaker. This dog means the world to me, and I would do anything for her. I would appreciate any help you can offer.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
With love and hope,
John Emanuel and Harleequin (like the black & white cookies, not the motorcycles).
