Jason Shirk - emergency craniotomy performed on February 13th
On February 11th, after complaining of a headache for several days, Jason went to the emergency room to see if he needed care for a migraine. He had also been experiencing severe sensitivity to light, and some dizziness.
Upon arrival, labs and imaging were done to see what may be going on. Shockingly, a lime-sized mass was found on Jason's brain, behind his right eye. Doctors were not able to determine from scans whether the mass was a tumor or an abscess, and as a result, Jason was admitted for emergency surgery the following morning. The neurosurgeons were able to remove what turned out to be an abscess from his right side occipital lobe. Thankfully, the biopsy revealed no cancer, and a bacterial infection (streptococcus) was likely the cause.
Jason has been out of work as a result, and is going to have a long road to recovery. His medical bills are going to be high, and he needs all the help he can get to ease the burden of his recovery and lost wages.
Please - take a moment to give whatever you can to help our dear friend. Jason was so excited to move to Oregon in December, and although he is in good hands with the Clancy and Kallunki families taking care of his daily needs, that's not going to be enough to assist him with the longer-term effects of this unfortunate situation.
Any financial assistance you can provide will be a huge help. Jason has not been taking many calls, as he doesn't want people feeling sorry for him, but it's my duty as his friend to do all I can to help! Feel free to call me and chat, but more importantly - take just a few moments to pledge on this page. I apologize that I have not been personally able to call every one of our friends to discuss Jason's situation. As you can imagine, it has been a very stressful time for us all here in Eugene.
If you want to mail a card, you can do that as well. I'm sure it will be appreciated:

Jason's scar: 33 staples and a 10-inch incision.

In-home antibiotic infusions will need to be administered for 6-8 weeks.

Jason has a pic line in his side for the antibiotic injections.

Post-surgery - several days in the hospital.
