As many of you know, our friend and brother, Jay Shroda has been fighting cancer for the past seven months. For those of you that don’t know, last fall Jay was diagnosed with stomach cancer. After repeated hospital visits and multiple surgeries, doctors had to remove 75% of his stomach. Since then Jay has been struggling through his recovery. Most foods have had bad reactions causing nausea and vomiting. This in turn has further complicated his recovery and led to several other hospital stays for dehydration and another surgery for a hernia caused by the vomiting.
Jay has spent the last 18 years as a dedicated public servant, working as a Deputy Sheriff here in Wood County. His spirit of giving of himself and helping others was never more apparent than last fall. While in the hospital Jay was moved by witnessing the number of children in his community that are also fighting with cancer. For years Jay has participated in events like Locks for Love or St. Baldrick’s Day so he decided that this year he would sponsor a St. Baldrick’s Day event in our community. Through Jay’s hard work and the support of our community, they were able to raise $19,000 to help support the fight against childhood cancer. Furthermore, in the fall of 2016 Jay put together a fundraiser selling t-shirts and coffee mugs with 100% of the proceeds going to the Wisconsin Law Enforcement Memorial Fund. This fundraiser raised over $1500 for his brother and sisters that have fallen in the line of duty. These are just the most recent examples of how Jay continually puts the needs and well-being of others ahead of his own.

Jay did not ask us for help and honestly will probably be mad at us for doing this. But we see the financial toll his fight with cancer is having on him and his wife Hillary. Hospital co-pays, deductibles along with living expenses are adding up faster than they can keep up with. Jay has been selfless his entire life helping friends, family and complete strangers at every turn. It is now our turn to repay that. Please give as much as you can spare to help Jay and Hillary as he continues his fight against this horrible illness!
